In short: Great race for people living around Croydon In full: This is organised by Striders of Croydon a runners club for Adults only. They follow almost same route, but twice, as Croydon 10k which is arranged by another runner's club - Croydon Harriers in mid October. Great race but don't expect any cheering crowds. I hardly saw anyone cheering except Marshals. Date of review: April 10, 2015
In short: Tough, but a real gem In full: Wow! They described this race as undulating and they weren't lying. A tough course and not especially scenic, although there were one or two nice stretches. This was a race and run foremost, an event second. Horrible weather, but the marshals were cheerful and encouraging throughout. Excellent organisation and I can't praise the marshals enough - the race was around residential areas and main roads, yet they made sure no one got lost. Great goody bag with socks and shotbloks and a lovely clubhouse to recover with a drink and get changed. Not for the faint hearted, but all abilities welcomed! I'll be back next year, fighting fit. Thank you, a real gem of a race. Date of review: April 1, 2015
In short: Fantastic marshals, really well-organised, great race In full: Not a course for those who want outstanding natural beauty, a civic reception, or huge supportive crowds. But an early morning 2x10k laps (plus interest) through residential roads and well away from the town centre keeps disruption and the entrance fee down. This is a race for running rather than sightseeing.
Nearly every review for every race praises the marshals, but for this race they were particularly outstanding - this course needs a lot of marshals and active marshalling in many places to keep runners on the right route, on the right side of the road, and away from hazards (including trams). At the same time they kept up a stream of constant support, which was brilliant. Thank you all.
The course itself is undulating throughout and each lap features one long climb and one long descent, and a climb over the last mile or so up to the finish which felt much tougher on the second lap than the first.
Organisation was first class with a local sports club providing good changing/toilet facilities. Nice goodie back with a medal, free pair of socks, banana/water and and some energy bars.
Thanks to everyone involved. Date of review: March 30, 2015
In short: A marshal's review - great running CHM runners In full: Ok so I'm a marshal and not a runner for this race, but I thought I'd give a review from a marshal's perspective. Previous years have seen glorious sunshine for this race, but not so this year (I blame the forum member who said it was always sunny for this race!). That didn't seem to deter the runners - well done one and all who did a fantastic job running in tought conditions on an undulating (some say hilly!) course. Fast or slow, you runners were inspiring for us marshals and you should be very proud of your achievements. Date of review: March 29, 2015
In short: Brilliant marshals In full: Wet, windy, hilly, but so well organised with fabulous marshals cheering everyone on, I very much enjoyed my first Croydon Half and aim to come back next year to improve on my time. Date of review: March 29, 2015
In short: Well organised race. Definitely undulating! In full: A well organized reasonably prices half marathon. Support from the marshals was very good. Two laps of undulations, with a jaunt across the tram tracks. First lap I prayed, "please don't let the light turn red" and thought about putting on a sprint just to make sure. Second lap I looked at the tram lights and prayed "please turn to red so I'm forced to have a stop!" Start/finish area was good at the cricket club, and meant I could have a pint in the sun when I'd finished. I was still there to see the last finisher come in, and an effort was made to give him a big cheer and lots of support when he crossed the line.
The negatives - I found the course a little dull. Lots of twists and turns round suburban roads. Although the marshals were very supportive, there was little other support on the course. And having pretty much a mile of up hill for the last mile put away any chance of me pb-ing.
I was also surprised how many ignored the no ipod/mp3s rule. Considering the race was on un-closed roads with a tram track crossing. Date of review: March 31, 2014
In short: Absolute Bargain Race! (But don, tell everyone!) In full: I absolutely loved this race. I was thinking of giving it a miss as the logistics of getting to the start for the 9.15 "off" seemed a bit of a nightmare, however i,m glad i mad the effort as this race (so far!) has been my favourite race of 2014! Not a race, race as some sections of the pavements were very narrow which prevented overtaking (and explains the 750 runner limit) and there is a chance a Tram might hold you up! But a great atmosphere and cameraderie among other runners, The only negative i can find is that headphones were supposedly banned, but quite a few runners were wearing them, i hope the organisers took note of their numbers and are going to disqualify them! That aside, for the price it was incredibly generous, a niceish medal, although not bespoke, a goody bag, an apple and/or a banana at the finish and a free massage if you wanted it! I will definitely return in 2015 as this race is a little Gem! (but don,t tell everyone! ;-)) ) Date of review: March 30, 2014
In short: A nice surprise and great to have a course which really is just undulating In full: My first time at this event and what a lovely friendly race. I'm normally against multi lap races but this was nicely set up with gradients which never seemed as steep as the hills you were coasting down. Great volunteers with a sense of humour and well worth heading back to next year Date of review: March 30, 2014
In short: Ran the croydon half marathon for the first time today. Organisation first class. Route hilly and challenging but made up for by the friendliness of the marshals. Can't remember seeing so many at a race. Good finish area. Nothing to fault! Date of review: March 30, 2014
In short: Well organised, but the uphill bits were hard... In full: My first half marathon, and I enjoyed it, although the hills were hard work. Very well organised, good marshalls and a clear route. Date of review: April 9, 2013
