In short: Glorious viewson the run, and well organised with a great feed to boot! In full: thoroughly enjoyed this run. A very scenic route, mostly off road. Although there is a killer road climb there is a descent to make up for it. Good buffet afterwards! Date of review: June 12, 2013
In short: Tough uphill start, fabulous trails, long slog up the moorland road then wonderful three-mile downhill back to base In full: This is a tough race, I'm never keen on road running, though chatted with the organisers who said it was unavoidable if the distance was to be achieved. The Colne Valley Lions were lovely, very encouraging, though they did run out of water at the first station, fortunately it wasn't too hot so I managed until the second. The cornish pasties at the end made up for it, though - simply the best!
It was good to see young people from Hollybank, the race's chosen charity, there, and I was very pleased to be presented with my medal by a Paralympian! I even blogged about it:
In short: Beautiful scenery, challenging hills In full: This was my first trail race and second real hill experience - and I loved it - in most part. The scenery was spectacular, the organisers were friendly and welcoming - a fantastic run to do. Just a few quibbles - the first half mile or so was uphill on roads with quite a bit of traffic - and for runners who start slowly (and even more so uphill!) there is nothing more annoying than cars right behind you who will not pass even when you step aside for them! There was no water at the first 2 water stations by the time we arrived - I was glad we had brought our own reserves in case of a hot day. Also, they advertise this as a race for walkers too, giving a time limit of 5 hours. My parents and sons walked the course in just over 4 hours - well within the course time limit - but the mountain rescuers were right behind them (walking with them at some points) putting pressure on them to go faster. And when they got back, the organisers at race HQ were packing up as if everything had finished, which spoilt the experience for them. Date of review: June 10, 2013
In short: Tough but rewarding race! In full: After much nagging from my fell running friend I thought I'd give this a go. The first 6 miles were a brutal uphill slog, but luckily the weather was kind and it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be. The feeling of cresting the last hill was brilliant so much so I actually went "Whee" as I started the decent back down to Marsden! Managed not to get passed all the way back and actually caught one runner about a mile from the finish. Add to that a top 40 finish and a PB of 1.16.35 and all in all a great day. Thanks to the Colne Valley Lions for the nice and much needed refreshments at the end. Well worth visit next year! Date of review: June 9, 2013
In short: Very tough but a great challenge and well organised In full: Really enjoyable race, very tough first 5-6 miles which are climbing and climbing and climbing to the top of Wessenden Head Road which affords some incredible views on a good day then a superb downhill along Wessenden trail which does have some flat but the feeling cresting the top of the hill knowing the climbing is done is a great one.
The 2012 race was very welcoming and there were teas/drinks/cakes etc after which were available for a charity donation.
Top value and I'm definitely doing 2013. Date of review: May 31, 2013
In short: Tough, but worth it! In full: My 3rd year at this race, and how it's gathering in numbers now word is getting round. A great - but challenging - course. Thank goodness for fine weather otherwise could be pretty grim!
Well organised by local Lions club, although my only gripes are the same as last year; Lack of a dedicated website (still can't find any results!) and some isolated areas of the route could probably do with a marshal or two just from the point of view if anyone suffers an injury, you're a long way from help.
Great send off & presentation by the Mayor. Ace grub at the end at race HQ, and all in a fantastic setting. I'll be back for more.
A definite challenge, but well worth the effort Date of review: June 15, 2012
