In short: Thank you Gade Valley for an excellent run - again! In full: A lovely atmosphere, great marshals, well organised, beautiful scenery, quiet country roads, water and jelly babies along the way, cake & coffee at the end. Great value for £5. Brilliant run for marathon training. well done, Gade Valley & thank you (much better then running a 17 miler by myself) Date of review: March 2, 2016
In short: Excellent, well organised run. In full: Great training run along the canal and then up to Ashridge. Course is not flat but also not too challenging. Volunteers were very encouraging. Could not be beaten for £5.00. Date of review: February 25, 2014
In short: Wonderful event, well-organised, friendly marshals & cakes and tea at the end. In full: Perfect training run as an alternative to the usual club round. Even in the cold wind and rain the marshals were unfailingly friendly and encouraging. Challenging but scenic route. Looking forward to the 20 miler. Date of review: February 24, 2014
In short: Tough run well organised by a generous and welcoming club. In full: Good reminder of what marathons are all about, long tough runs in the drizzle. Come April you'll wonder what the fuss was about. I like this run and I admire the club for putting them on. Full marks all round. Date of review: February 23, 2014
In short: Low key, great value training race In full: A scenic low key training run. A staggered start, which took a lot of pressure off the event. No chip timing or numbers - you time yourself, so again the pressure is off. The first 3 miles along the Great Union Canal, scenic but muddy and a bit slippy, but much better underfoot than it could have been with the recent rain. Then followed a mile uphill - testing, but with a well-placed water stop at the top, it's not beyond any runner who has trained smart. Lovely countryside followed, another couple of hills, then from about 14 miles it was downhill most of the way. Lots of friendly marshals along the well-signposted route. Back at the finish, tea/coffee and cake (but a long queue for this). Good facilities - sufficient toilets, and showering/changing facilities. And for the princely sum of...£5. Make it part of your Spring marathon training if Hemel Hempstead is not too far to travel. It's just a shame I won't be running the 20 mile training race in March, as it is 2 weeks before my chosen marathon. But will make sure I do all three next year (12 miler in January makes up the three). Well done Gade Valley Harriers - a lovely event. Date of review: February 23, 2014
In short: If only all runs were like this In full: The Hemel training runs are legendary - and rightly so. If only all runs were like this. Only £5, yet you get the support and protection of the marshals, and stand-by first aiders. Plus, you get unlimited hot tea and cake at the end. I've paid ten times as much for far, far less.
The course starts flat for three miles along the Grand Union Canal, but then goes up a long stiff climb for a couple of miles, and remains hilly/undulating until the end. The course is through attractive countryside and little villages. Very pleasant. The runners and marshals are relaxed, cool, friendly, and there is a special feel, as most people are doing this as part of training for London.
I can't think of any problems with this run at all. Yes, there's no supporters, yes, there's no big race atmosphere, but you aren't here for that. You are here purely for the run, and it's a perfect run.
I did it in 3.10.43, and finished strong, so I was buzzing. Date of review: March 23, 2013
In short: Superb training run for a superb price In full: First one of these runs I have ever done and I wish I had done more. Wonderfully attended run which beats long runs alone. Brilliant organisation and fantastic price. £5 for run, coffee and cake. Marshalls, Water stops and Jelly bean stop all very well manned. Friendly helpful and well marked. Spot on - this is the way all races should be! Well done Gade valley!
