In short: Much better than previous Edinburgh half marathons In full: Having done many of the previous half marathons in Edinburgh and getting fed up going along the coast all the time (same with the full marathon), I much more enjoyed the imaginative course through Edinburgh. There were hills to knock a few minutes off your pace but nothing more. Starting and finishing in holyrood made everything much easier. Good medal, T shirt etc. with excellent organisation. Oh and the bands were brill! Date of review: April 21, 2012

In short: Excellent Race! Well done to the first Rock n Rollers in the UK In full: I've done a Rock n Roll race before in the USA so I was hoping for great things and I wasn't disappointed. The route was beautiful in places especially going round Arthurs Seat and along by the sea. It was a bit hilly in places but it made it all the more interesting and you got to see Edinburgh. The bands, dancers and DJs along the route were excellent and really motivating. The organisation was also very good and there was plenty of water, energy drinks and gels along the route. I took a bottle at most of the stations so I didn't experience the cup problem highlighted in some of the reviews. Also I was able to see all the mile markers along the whole route. I loved the fact that it started and finished at Holyrood Park. It prevented all the hassle of trying to get transport back into Edinburgh that I've experienced at "the other" Edinburgh race. The medal, tshirt and goodies at the end were excellent. I'll be back next year. Date of review: April 21, 2012

In short: Good race, some nice hills and a PB for me! In full: I enjoyed this race.
The problems:
1. There was a few too many countdowns at the start, but that's liveable. 2. The pacers were wrong and there were no mile markers for the first 5 miles (which meant i was pushing myself too hard thinking that i was behind target when i wasn't) 3. By the later stages water was handed out in cups rather than bottles - when will organisers learn that this is useless? You can't run and drink from a cup at the same time!
What i enjoyed:
1. The race route was nice, a good mix of hills and flat - very enjoyable 2. The organisation was good - i liked that you picked up your race tee the day before so no confusion at the end. 3. The commentator at the end was brilliant.
Overall i enjoyed it, i'd do it again. I didn't think the stages with live music were needed around the course though! Date of review: April 18, 2012

In short: Challenging course, great atmosphere and love the bands every mile! In full: The organisation was faultless on the day, the starting corrals working a treat. The course itself was downhill/flat for the first 4.6m (out of the city and along the prom), then turned back and over the next 4 mile gradually rose as we ran back to the city around the back of Arthurs Seat! Final 4 or so mile were up and down hills around city centre where support was great!
Only downside was that I had to run further than I expected, as my Garmin clocked 13.26m, despite taking the shortest lines round every corner! Did a quick poll from approx 8 people afterwards...Shortest measurement was 13.22, longest was 13.39! Date of review: April 17, 2012

In short: great course, well organised In full: Great course that offers some not too arduous hills which makes it more interesting rather than being flat as a pancake. Organisation was generally very good, although I'm not sure if I'd have been stopped to let cars past if I'd been a bit slower - seemed to just make it through road crossings 3 times just before they allowed cars to go. Mile markers did not seem to be in the right places as my watch said 4:55 for one lap and then 9:11 for the next, around 8 miles in. 10 km electronically logged marker was useful, but I guess a standard feature in a race of this size. Very pleased with time, over 4 minutes faster than previous year on flatt EMF half marathon course. Bands Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Kassidy were very good. A voucher to claim a claim a burger and hot drink at the end of the race would be a nice addition. Energy drinks were served in wide cardboard cups that made it impossible to drink from without slowing right down or splashing more liquid than drinking. Crowd was great. Weather: 5'C, sunny, negligible wind. Date of review: April 16, 2012

In short: Brilliant atmosphere, the best half marathon I've done and I've run a lot of them. In full: I expected something different in this race from the website and pre race info and I wasn't disappointed. The organisation was great, the bands and booming music round the course gave you a real lift. The guy under the North Bridge with a scottish accent barking encouragment over a microphone to a backing of rock music was a hoot. And to top it all great weather. I'll definitely back next year.

In short: Very well organised. In full: We had a really great day. Staggered start worked well, and there were no hold ups. The new route showed off edinburgh well, rather than the traditional East Lothian route. Enjoyed the Scottish national anthem at the start (very American).
Had to queue a while to get my bag at the end, and there were lots of people in the wrong queue on the saturday when registering. But they were very minor points that didn't detract from the overall event. Date of review: April 16, 2012

In short: Great day, good route, good atmosphere. In full: I opted for the race-pack to be posted out at an additional cost of £5 so no need to attend the expo day before.
Come race day it was a good atmosphere, helped by fantastic weather and decent spectator turnout. Bands added a little bit of an edge and support and made it a bit different to standard road-race. Route was a good tour of Edinburgh City and coast, the long gradual hills were expected given Edinburgh is a hilly place, but nothing which was too horrible. I almost managed a PB anyway. Well placed water/energy stations.
Organisation was good but one must put up with the most Americanisation of a start/finish you could imagine (you have to go just to hear the female mc). They brought their own US crew who were helpful and even did the whole national anthem singing thing providing an 'interesting' version of flower of scotland before we could set off.
Awesome medal and sports-tee, always a bonus too.
Not sure who provided the pace-runners but they did a good job.
Only major criticism would be the mile-markers were small, black and rather discreet so missed a few which led to my own personal confusion at times. Date of review: April 15, 2012
