In short: A lovely route, friendly marshalls, interesting mix of terrains In full: I really enjoyed this 10 mile. A really runners' run, very friendly marshals and fellow runners, no frills but everything important was there. Great cake at the end too :-) I didn't find it particularly hilly, but the terrain was a challenge, particularly the bits going through long grass in fields and the mud was hard as nails in the sweltering heat..but this change in terrain made it an interesting and quite picturesque course. And the heat!! Very little shade to be found. Next year I shall wear a hat. And bring more money for cake. Thanks all, I really enjoyed it Date of review: July 5, 2014
In short: Good event, excellent marshalling :) In full: Despite my beginner status, the hot weather and tricky terrain I did really enjoy the event (especially when it was over).
I found the route difficult, the paths are tricky and there's a fair amount of long grass to run through but the beautiful scenery and the excellent marshals really did make it an enjoyable event. The running club were very organised and the cheers received over the finish line really did make the event day.
Water stations, parking, timing and post event t-shirt were all brilliant and I really can't praise the volunteers highly enough.
I probably wouldn't do the event again as I just found it a bit too tough and with slightly dodgy ankles it's one to have enjoyed doing once. That said I'd happily volunteer next year! Date of review: June 23, 2014
In short: Really a trail run now, and seems underrated, not sure why, as its a very good, well organised run In full: Have been doing the Stortford 10 for years now in its various incarnations, and this latest route is my favourite.
Its now much more of a trail run, with the added bonus of Marshalls to prevent those little detours that are frequent in pure trail running. Some of the going is quite rutted (muddy if wet) and a lots through long grass.
3 Drink stations, which were appreciated on a hot day, and a well-marshalled course, which could be described as flattish.
Not sure why its not more popular! When I think of runs like the Brentwood 1/2 which sell out at twice the entry fee for a rubbish medal and similar facilities it does make me wonder re runners common sense.
My only gripe was no sign of the showers, which I could definitely have done with on such a hot day, but I presume the Rugby Club were having a summer refurb, so........ just tuff luck then. Date of review: June 23, 2014
In short: My home town race, love it. In full: This is my local race & 3rd time I've ran it over this course. It is very tough, but at least it wasn't 30 degrees like last year. Great fun in the mud & hills. I'd forgotten again how tough the last 2 miles are on this course. Date of review: June 19, 2012
In short: Lethal but Lovely In full: A friendly and well-organised race but be warned! The course is extremely tough. Lots of steep climbs and some long sections which involved wading through brown sludge. Could've done with a canoe. Good atmosphere in the face of adversity though and some attractive trails.
I second the reviewer who suggested an additional water station -- or perhaps they could just use bottles. It was a pretty hot day and you don't get much fluid in a plastic cup. I don't want to detract from the organisers though. Special thanks to the marshal 8.5 miles in who gave me a sip of her coffee thermos when I was feeling dehydrated. And it's definitely a good idea to hold it in a rugby club - needed that shower afterwards! Date of review: June 18, 2012
In short: The first couple of miles don't prepare you for what's to come! In full: A friendly well-organised race with lots of marshals out on the course offering words of encouragement. Incredibly tough though, once you hit the first long muddy trail, then the fields and farm tracks and the scramble up through the woods. Glad this wasn't my first race over this distance, and happy with my time and position - not a race to expect a PB on unless it happens to be your first 10 miler! Date of review: June 18, 2012
In short: Where is the warning that should come with this race?? Fantastic race , lovely marshalls but soooo hard...not for beginners or the fainthearted In full: I have run a few marathons and many halves in my time but this 10 has to rate amongst the hardest runs I have done. Hilly and cross country, mud and hard tracks followed by long grass made it even harder. However, the marshalls were plentiful and friendly and encouraging and the course was scenic which always helps. My only real complaint is the lack of water stations as I feel I would really have benefitted from another station between mile 3 and 8, especially as it was so warm today...maybe next year another could be added?? Loved the tshirt and although it was hard I may well be back.... Date of review: June 17, 2012
In short: Fantastic Race In full: Really enjoyed this race. Great scenary, very well organised, and the marshalling was spot on. A big thank you to the gentleman from the rugby club who kept me going for the last 3 miles in bringing up the rear! Date of review: June 17, 2012
In short: Tough and mucky but great fun. In full: This is NOT the race for PBs. The course is tough and multi-terrain it most certainly is. After mile three there was a good half mile of slippy mud - I got stuck and had to be pulled out! Following this there is hard uneven ground, hills and tricky trails. However, it is very well organised and the marshals were excellent. Not for the faint-hearted, but good fun and most runners were cheerful if a little worn out. The weather was great today and the views were spectacular at times. Plus, with a good quality t-shirt at the end, this race is an absolute bargain. Well done BSRC! Date of review: June 17, 2012
