In short: I lapped it up... In full: 26x1mile laps + 0.2ml at start. Run on grass (that is not a training tip). Friendly organisers. Chip-timing. Good tec-tee and running socks plus a medal the size and weight of a dustbin lid. Just water and energy drink in cups, but easy to leave your own bits and bobs. Lots of facilities at Littledown centre - free parking, plenty of toilets, café etc. I shall run this again. Date of review: June 15, 2014
In short: Great marathon for someone chasing a time or not confident enough to go point to point In full: One lap = one mile, race 26 laps after a .2 start.
Excellent facilities of the sports centre which had ample parking, showers and cafe. On site for the marathon; table for drinks, water, gels and energy drink that where available every mile and toliets at every mile.
Decent course with a few narrow points on the grass and small gradient change. You won't get that big marathon feel but the people around will cheer you on nicely. You will be lapped but will also lap people which means you see people again and again in a nice way. Nice pricegiving at the end.
In short: Made an interesting change... In full: 26 flat laps, road shoes used on the firm parkland grass. Free parking and lots of it at the rather interesting Littledown Centre - busy sports 'hub' with lots going on plus it has a cafe etc.
The organisation and facilities for this small marathon are basic - chip timing is good, organisers friendly, course well marked (a whitewashed line to follow).I enjoyed the multi lap format, no surprises around corner and psychologically it was good counting down the laps. One has to prepare oneself to be lapped (perhaps many times) but lapping others is rather fun. Nice medal and a pair of 'proper' running socks at finish. Would be nice to have a little more on the drink station (you can put your own bits and bobs on it) there is just water and energy drink plus some gels (which I never use - sticky and horrid tasting, IMHO)'proper' changing/storage facilities and showers would also be excellent....a tec-tee would be nice as would a slice of cake and a banana at finish.
On the whole it was a worthwhile and positive experience. Date of review: June 15, 2013
In short: Excellent organisation, great support, In full: I have done many bigger marathons but this one really stood out for me. The organisation was second to none, the support was amazing and the multi laps meant that water, jelly babies, gels, energy drinks etc.. were handed out every mile. Overall a great race and fantastic atmosphere. Date of review: June 23, 2012
In short: WOW! WOW! and triple WOW! what a fantastic weekend of fund-raising for my charities and publicity for my challenge. In full: The inaugural "Littledown Marathon on the 17th June 2012 at the Littledown Centre, Bournemouth, was a fantastic success for the Race Director Ade Holloway of Run Yer Socks Off and the Littledown Harriers that supported the event. The marathon was in support of my (Barry Light's) 60in60at60 Marathon Challenge and was a major fund-raising event for my charities. Everything about the day was spot on and to cap it all it was great to meet Martin and Liz Yelling and little Ruby - If you would like to read more then check out my full blog here at at http://is.gd/b1Pa7g Date of review: June 21, 2012
In short: small, friendly event In full: This was my first marathon, really enjoyed it (well, the first 20 miles at least).
Course was a little unusual being 26 laps of a 1 mile circuit. The repetitiveness didn't bother me at all and 1 mile laps meant more support, drinks and jelly babies every mile, and mile splits from the chip timing.
Organization was smooth, and there was a good atmosphere from participants and spectators. Also the only event I've been to where there was no queue for the toilets.
Only reason I'm not sure if I'd do this again is because I don't know if I'll ever do another marathon. Date of review: June 20, 2012
In short: great for starters In full: some tricky bits around a tree at the3/4 mark , narrow path around a root. chip timed where table of drinks was and constant cheering from the organisers and those sat on benches. no medals but tshirt at the start. very friendly and was the first martahon or long run where could see my family after every half a mile or so. quite funny. great picnic park and loads there.
