In short: Great Atmosphere and well organised In full: This was my first 10k for a long while and I ran it for charity, but it was a nice atmosphere before and during the race. The marshalling was excellent, well organised and encouraging. I would definitely do this race again. Date of review: July 15, 2014
In short: Excellent well organised local race In full: Great to see a local running club and school coming together to offer a quality race. The course isn't flat, it undulates but still PB potential. Road closures and marshals make for a well run event and nice touches that set it apart from more mundane races. Deserved to have more runners for the effort that went into it. Will def do again in the future. Date of review: July 15, 2014
In short: One of my favourite races In full: Everything about this race is excellent... the Big Top was an added bonus. Great to have a PA system where you can actually hear what's going on. Excellent weather conditions and lots of fun. Date of review: July 15, 2014
In short: Decent race but ruined by a few minor points. In full: Decent as far as local 10ks go, but the two gates at the start could become scrum-like if you are not at the front of the pack. Would not have had a problem with the organisers if the people manning the water station at the 7k mark had handed you the water on a VERY HOT day instead of intentionally throwing it at you instead of handing you the glasses. Goody bag consisted of a plastic bag and a leaflet, not that impressive. Date of review: July 14, 2013
In short: Fast and well supported; a great start for a new run In full: This is a new run, and like an earlier poster I would have appreciated being able to hear the PA system and a banana at the end, but those really are the only quibbles.
It was easy to find, I had no problem parking, there were plenty of toilets (you could use the leisure centre ones as well as the portaloos if you wandered inside) and no queues to collect numbers. I left my chip behind by mistake and the organisers went out of their way to find me and give it back.
The course is out and back, almost all on-road, undulating but not hilly. It isn't as pancake flat as Eastleigh but it is a lot prettier. I knocked almost 4 minutes off my PB and I race most weekends. There was plenty of space on the road to stretch my legs and I really appreciated the masses of supportive marshals and locals who turned out to cheer. It was well worth the trip, thank you. In short: Fast course with mild undulations, smoothly run for a first-time event In full: Before the day the cost seemed a touch expensive for a relatively low-key 10k, however after the event it seems like good value and certainly not expensive compared to the local and well-established Eastleigh 10k.
- Road closures and loads of marshals - I suspect many more than essential for the course; - plenty of local support throughout the route; - choice of water stations - one for the cup lovers and one for the bottle lovers; - track start and finish with chip timing and large timing clock; - 'big top' for registration and for shade on this one sunny day of the month; - registration, toilets and baggage drop all reasonably close to the start; - results available quickly, online and on powerof10 the same day; - reasonable medal and goody bag and bottled water at the finish;
This event seemed to take the best of both worlds of small club runner events and large charity events and cater for everyone at a reasonable price with a good atmosphere.
If I was nitpicking then these would be the things I would have pointed out: - a banana or some such other recovery munch by the finish would have been nice, so that people can wait and cheer on others finishing without needing to go back to the baggage retrieval first; - given the quality of all the technology at the start, it seemed hopeful that this could be one of those rare days when you can actually hear the pre-race briefing. Alas, I could barely make out a word through the soft muffled PA, even for the token five seconds when runners genuinely tried to be quiet and listen before giving up and carrying on talking. - is it me or were those safety pins humongous? :-)
Despite what others have written, I thought this was a fast course and it was a PB for me. Not quite flat, just mildly undulating enough to vary the muscle groups in use in a way that a truly flat course does not. If Garmin Connect is to be believed then there is a drop of ~10m and back up from 1.5km to 2.5km and then the same on return at 7.5km to 8.5km, I certainly wouldn't describe it as 'hilly' though. According to powerof10 there were 9 PBs among the top 30 finishers. Date of review: July 16, 2012
In short: Well organised and good fun with friendly runners In full: This was my 2nd ever 10k run and I wanted to do a flatter run after having done the Marwell 10k as my first race. It was great fun, the hill towards the end was "fun" but the rest of the race I really enjoyed, did a new pb by 1 min 20 seconds!! Date of review: July 16, 2012
In short: A very well run event, great atmosphere! In full: Well I enjoyed that, what a well run event.We were greeted at the car park entrance by a really cheerful Marshall and this set the tone for the rest of the event. The marshalls were superb, incredibly friendly, helpful and efficient.
Registration was in a big top they had set up in the grounds, this had a ever so slight downside, my two year old daughter got overly excited as was shouting 'Circus!!' with glee. Registration itself was quick, friendly and efficient. Then it was on to the start line after some warming up, ready for the off.
The course itself was good with markers every km and plenty of support along the way, the roads being closed off and lots of marshalls and local residents lining the route as well as a couple of well positioned water stops.
The hill towards the end was a bit of a killer but none the less I managed to beat my previous 10k best set on a flat course. I came in in a time of 51:03, which is quite respectable for a fat bloke!
The end of the race, like the rest of the race, was well regimented, with chips removed, water bottle supplied, goodie bag and medal all at the ready. This is a race I would definitely do again. Superb Date of review: July 16, 2012
In short: Well organised In full: Brilliantly organised, so many marshals along the course. 1st running so lots of locals out supporting the event and the support was unusually non-partisan, great atmosphere. Date of review: July 16, 2012
