In short: 2013 RACE NO WHERE ELSE TO RATE IT In full: This is an odd one, a straightforward course with, a bit of a hill at the end which does make a PB a challenge, but not bad, it is well organised as ever with BUPA but is lacking in something I think on the day less than 4,000 ran, and it clearly does not engage the city as support until the last 500 meters is sparse, not that that bothers me particularly but there is no real atmosphere ,I ran the Manchester 10k in May which had an awesome atmosphere and Leeds in July which is a full of fun. This one just misses something and I am not sure what. Date of review: September 30, 2013
In short: Good big-city run In full: Look, I actually liked the original Abbeydale Road/Millhouses route! It went past my house, so I was used to the never-ending climb up to the Tesco petrol station. Penistone Road is little more than a flattish slog - and we don't even get the trip under the stands at Hillsborough any more.
The t-shirt was very good this time, after a couple of very shoddy efforts in previous years.
The start is still poorly-managed - the Orange wave is too big and there are far too many 50-minute sorts getting in the way of 40-minute runners in the first 500 metres. Since this is steeply downhill, and narrow, it's a recipe for trips and spills.
Every year, I ask for them to relieve the congestion at the start - put a tight bottle-neck in just before the start line. Every year, it's the same problem. Bupa managed this at Birmingham in 2011 - any chance they can apply this to Sheffield? Date of review: September 29, 2012
In short: Good city-centre 10K, killer hill at the end! In full: There and back route from the city centre to Hillsborough, slightly boring route but decent crowd support along the way. The majority of the route is flat but unfortunately the last 2K is mainly uphill which can be a bit of a killer at that stage, perhaps tricky to get a PB for that reason. Well-organised. In short: A well organised BUPA run In full: Registered the week before as a last minute decision to use it as a warm up for the GNR. First time doing it, read about the killer hills, so had advanced warning but that did not make the hills any easier, especially near the finish!
There was a 'peaceful' feel at the start. People seemed to be very subdued - may be due to the heat, it was 17c but sunny so quite hot for a run.
Very impressed with the number of toilets available, it's the only race so far I've attended where there were more toilets than queues! Does make a huge difference not to feel rushed at the start.
I thought the water and shower stations were slightly off where they were stated to be on the booklet, which could have affected some people's running plans, although it is only 10k.
It was typical BUPA prices, but there is a nice medal and a t-shirt (not technical) and some goodies in the goody bag.
Overall it was enjoyable, and I would do it again next year. Will make it a regular annual event, only as it is easy to travel to for me from Leeds Date of review: September 25, 2012
In short: Great to feel the buzz of the crowd, but bands weren't great In full: My first 10k run in a couple of years so this was just to get back into the swing of it. First time in Sheffield, nice city, friendly people...and the crowd did a better job of supporting than previous reviews might suggest - they definitely kept me going!
The last 500m was beastly, but overall very enjoyable. If I didn't have to factor in train fares and a place to stay for the night I'd think £27 was a bargain...however I'm not too sure chip timing and a t-shirt/medal really comes anywhere close to that. Would run it again, glad to be running these events again - its been too long! Date of review: September 7, 2012
In short: Well organised race suitable for all abilities In full: I agree with the comments already made in that the bands were disappointing. Although the young singers were very good they weren't very motivating or rousing and I didn't hear one band play at all while I past them going out and coming back. The cheerleaders and charity supporters were very good though and motivating. The aerobic warm up was excellent as he'd planned ahead and done a routine which anyone could join in and he made good use of the limited space when you are in the penned area. The first km was very slow as the road narrowed so there was a bit of a bottleneck and you just had to go with the flow. The goody bag was very good with practical energy bars and drink in. A well organised race but lacking in atmosphere for a Bupa event. Date of review: September 6, 2012
In short: Reducing in quality In full: This was my fourth time of running this event and although numbers are going up the quality is reducing Bands and support are thinning out year on year with the support virtually non existent from 1.5km to 8.5km In comparison to the Great Manchester the organisers seem to be taking their eye off the ball here The out and back route is flat (for Sheffield) and only has two hills but is fairly uninteresting Date of review: September 6, 2012
In short: Yet another excellent Great Run Event In full: This was rather down on entertainment this year. The start and finish were excellent but the middle seemed very quiet with both crowd support and music. Dulled the atmosphere slightly. However, still excellent for slower runners and beginners and really appreciated the shower. Date of review: September 5, 2012
In short: GREAT is the word... In full: Once again the BUPA series does not fail to impress. Great organisation, great crowds, great goody bag, great atmosphere. Could have had some more water/drinks at the start readily available considering the sponsors banners everywhere and the usual bands on the run were conspicuous by thier absence. I thought that there were less runners this year, I haven't seem the totals for 2011 v 2012 but it felt less well attended both by participants and spectators alike. On the whole it was a great experience, but don't take your eye off the ball BUPA, there are others who will take your crown if you'er not careful. Date of review: September 5, 2012
