In short: This definitely Yorkshire flat! Very hilly, stunning views on a nice day (which it was), not a PB course. But a definite one for the diary, set in a wonderful location, superbly organised and marshalled, and all funds go to Barnsley Hospice. Date of review: October 19, 2014
In short: Very hard 10k! Well done to Barnsley Hospice for saving the event In full: Quite possibly the hardest race I've done. Loads of long steep hills. The goody bag for a small event was really good, especially as the event was saved at the last minute by Barnsley Hospice. The organisers deserve great credit for all their efforts. In short: Potential to be a great race In full: Agree with comments about toilets, water stops and crowding but they are relatively easy to resolve. Enjoyed the route and now I know about the challenging last km I'll save a bit next year! Date of review: August 23, 2012
In short: Room for improvement. In full: I did set a PB on this course and it was a surprisingly challenging last km. As already said 1.Toilets- Non existent 2.Pre race registration a farce and start instructions PA v.poor. 3.Still only very basic race positions, ie no age categories on results page (on another site) I finished in the top 25 and Traffic wasn't a problem or crowds at the end. Seemed to be a lot of new runners not many club runners,so standard wasn't that high(40min 25s got me 22nd out of over 550!) Oh and I clocked it at 9.77 kms lots of other experienced runners thought it was short too. Apart from that I enjoyed it! Date of review: August 18, 2012
In short: poor organisation In full: water station issues, even at the finish line!! The photo on Barnsley Hospice facebook page clearly shows the problem... 2 volunteers with 1 table and 15-20 cups of water ready for 700+ runners coming in, the majority not having had a drink for the last 10k!! No one was directing at the finish line so there was a build up of both runners and non-runners stood like muppets, not knowing where they should be going.
The biggest issue was safety... More than once my friend and I had to move over for cars to pass and not hit us whilst running!!! Date of review: August 14, 2012
In short: Must try harder In full: As a permanent race fixture this event has great potential, however i think some lessons need to be learn't mainly: 1. Toilet facilities at the start 2. Bigger & better KM markers, i missed all 9, & i'm not blind. 3. One water station was insufficient 4. Finish was too tight with spectators encroaching. All things that can be easily rectified, hope they do it again next year...
P.S. Where are the results?????? Date of review: August 13, 2012
In short: Good, challenging course with excellent setting for the finish In full: I don't want to repeat everything already said, and as a first race it was OK with a number of areas for improvement. Key ones for me:
1. you really need to be better with the drinks station. Runners in the stride don;t want to stop and wait for someone to fill a cup. I just skipped it as I could see what was happening.
2. At the finish you need to keep non-runners well away from the actual finish line. They really clogged it up and with many there who i suspect hadn't been to races before, they really (but not intentionally) got in the way.
I hope you have another go next year as i really enjoyed the course. But definate room for improvement. Thanks to all the supporters and marshalls who did their best. Date of review: August 13, 2012
In short: ok In full: lots of improvements needed please ie, toilets at start, more water stations (better manned) and much much better traffic control. oh and sort out a better PA system :-D Date of review: August 12, 2012
Enjoyed the run today however, where are the results? So frustrating that the website is down now, 8 hours after the race, as it was on the morning before the event!!!
PLUS... no toilets at the start??? What were the organisers thinking??? Competitors were fighting for loos at the railway station and annoying the staff at the local pubs, runners hydrate like mad before a race and need to peeeeeeeee!
PLUS PLUS...I received a mediocre goody bag for the steep entry price, please just include a couple of gels or energy bar which we can use fore our next training run run and you have happy runners, it's not difficult! We have enough water bottles (FGS) and how many long distance runners wear sweat bands??.
PLUS PLUS PLUS..There were too many vehicles on the route ignoring the closed signs causing safety issues for us runners, I saw many a car driving down roads that were supposedly closed.
PLUS PLUS PLUS PLUS The Public Address at the start was embarrassing (he he rather than cringy), the poor lord mayoress or whoever she was, sounded like a trapped wasp in a bottle! Why didn't someone step in? Pretty embarrassing for Barnsley don't you think? It was a Royston Vasey moment!!!!
Ah well,I guess you'll ask for advice on outside PA next time instead of using the first thing offered to you!
I hoped for so much more being a South Yorkshire resident, I really wanted this to work, a challenging 10K on my doorstep. Spot on...Hmmm???
I appreciate this was the first one, but was it organised by runners or opportunists?
I do feel short changed because there are so many better organised local events staged without the resources and manpower you have available, ones which operate for very little profit, within 25 miles of Barnsley.
You have an opportunity to make this a great annual event for local and runners from further afield but you need to listen and step up the the mark.
