In short: 3 laps around a park In full: Good organisation and being a 10k it's the kind of race you can just turn up for on the day. Being 3 laps meant that on bits of the 2nd lap and the 3rd lap there were lots of people to pass and this wasn't always easy as sometimes quite narrow paths or dodgy ground with puddles and holes to avoid. First 10k and overall was good so probably be back next year to do the series. Date of review: November 6, 2007
In short: good friendly local race In full: Had read all the bad press but really glad I ignored it. Applied quite late and given the postal strike was worried this could be a problem. The organisers contacted me and registration all ran smoothly. Nice friendly atmosphere on arrival with a group warm up. Number collection and bag drop off really quick. Setting off route a little packed but don't think I've done a race where it isn't. This is usually due to slower runners starting quite near the front. It was well marshalled and the other runners were really friendly. I'd worked out where the finish was gonna be before my 3rd lap so had no problem here. This was partly because the winner got there just as I was passing a lap behind. The commentator had tried to make it clear but probably needs to explain this even better at the start. Got a t-shirt and a medal. Will definately be back to run it again. Date of review: October 22, 2007
In short: Really enjoyed it In full: Was my first 10k race and I really enjoyed the experience. Finished in 56 mins and had no problems with the route - all seemed clearly marked to me. The marshals were great and cheered everyone on which helped me. Lovely sunny day, no feeling of elitism, will definitely consider the series next year. Date of review: October 17, 2007
In short: Friendly atmosphere, Nice terrain, really enjoyable race, well organised and will do it again. In full: Don't want to burst any PB bubbles, but did anyone else find this race about 400 - 500m shorter than 10K? Measured about 9.34km on my iPod, which usually measure a proper 10K race about 9.85km. Any other pedometer measurements available? Date of review: October 16, 2007
In short: Worth doing, despite the poor reviews In full: This race got awful reviews, and I was a bit concerned after some of the comments in this thread. But I live in S.E. London and have been wanting to do this since I first saw it advertised in 2005. I got injured at the Dulwich 10k and missed it that year, and was still injured last year! Slowing coming back to full fitness though, so I was keen to try out.
Yes, the start is bizarre. Woefully thin path that the whole field has to funnel down. And there was a photographer standing in the middle of it! And reading the reviews here, and carefully scrutinising the course map the day before, meant that I was prepared for the finish. I am sure that a lot of people wouldn't have realised that the finish is NOT at the end of the third lap, but actually filters off about a few hundred metres after the start of the FOURTH lap.
Overall, though, it was nice enough. I imagine it might be rather muddy and slippy if the weather had been wet. And there are a lot of sharp turns and bends which will slow you down. The narrow course means that it can also be difficult to overtake tha back markers on the final lap. Organisers seemed really friendly though and the marshalls were very encouraging. Would do this again next year. Date of review: October 15, 2007
In short: not nearly as bad as the other reviews say In full: there was almost no queue to pick up my number. a two-minute queue to drop off my bag and another 5 mins to get it back. really, no problems at all. overall, a well-organised race.
normally, i don't like running laps. this was okay-ish. not to crowded. didn't get a good time, but that had more to do with not sleeping the night before than with the course. i'll give it another go in 2008. Date of review: October 14, 2007
In short: Bad start, messy finish. Got a PB In full: The start was very congested through a very small set of fences and the finish was worse as, I didn't know where the finish was and blew my good finish too early. I was told to sprint, by a marshall, to the finish along a long straight to the bandstand, which i did, and then found the finish was a good 300k after it!!!!I finally found i had Beaten my best by 7 seconds, but could have done better if i hadn't gone the wrong way at the end. Bad marshalling who didn't realise i was finishing basically tried sending me for another lap instead of telling me and other finishers where the end was. Date of review: October 14, 2007
In short: Awful start and finish lines -- the start was very congested and the finish line is actually on the start of a fourth lap, which is extremely confusing when the organisers are shouting through the speakers that it is a three-lap race. In full: please please please sort out the kilometre markers before the next race -- pacing is impossible if you are not working with reality Date of review: August 22, 2007
In short: Good race, not too overcorwded. In full: Positives; Had no problems with registering or my number being sent out in the post. Group warm up was fun and there was a great atmosphere. Good t-shirt and medal as reward for getting round.
Negatives: They need more toilets as the queues build up and take ages. Would prefer to have 1 longer circuit as 3 laps can get repetitive, and you also have the elite atheltes passing you by. Is a fast race with lots of good local atheletes, making beginners feel super slow!
