In short: Enjoyable but teething problems In full: A fairly tough but enjoyable race round the centre of Shrewsbury. Support was fantastic all the way round. Not really PB potential. Only slight gripes were the 'zig-zag' section at the end of each lap and the organisation could have been better but seeing as this was the first time the event was staged you expect some teething problems. I think next year it would be better suited to a half marathon only. Date of review: June 25, 2013
In short: Oh what a shame! In full: So looking forward to this, but absolutely shocking organization! Thankfully the people of Shrewsbury turned out in their droves and helped create a fantastic atmosphere, and I would really like to see an event on an annual basis. Mixing the half and full marathons on a very tight course was a real mistake. Need to decide what it is - I would suggest the town is better suited to a half marathon.
As a visually impaired runner the course was a nightmare. Trying to pass slower runners and those with ipods, totally oblivious to other runners was very challenging. Quite liked the course, but too tight for so many people.
Lets hope they get it right for next year. i do concur with all the other comments about water, chips, the start and finish - a real mess! Date of review: June 24, 2013
In short: Hilly hell but great support! In full: Not really knowing the area and route I was totally underprepared for the number of and steepness of the hills involved which screwed my chances of a PB disappointingly. Still, a challenge is always good and the encouragement of the local supporters out in the cold and rain really helped spur me on. On the downside, the snaking back and fourth to make up the miles in the Quarry was awful, the runways too narrow, and there were pedestrians in the way. There was too much congestion around the finish line due to bad placement of medal table and spectators joining competitors as they'd crossed the line, causing a crowded chaos. There was a distinct lack of water on route, which meant no water for me on the last 4 miles or so resulting in dehydration and horrendous runners tummy for me for the last 24 hours. Apart from that I would do it again, but with better training and hydration preparations! Date of review: June 24, 2013
In short: Need to sort out lots of teething problems In full: As a 4 lap course I had a terrible job trying to overtake hundreds of slower runners who mostly were doing the half marathon. This problem was compounded by very narrow paths and runners wearing Ipods and oblivious to others needing to pass. There were many other gripes and problems which you would not encounter if the race had been organised by a running club and not an events company. Despite all of the negatives it was still a fantastic opportunity to run through our county town and the support and atmosphere were excellent. Lets hope the organisers learn from the mistakes and take some advice from the local running clubs! Date of review: June 24, 2013
In short: Established quality race price, but below average race In full: Race organisers made fundamental flaws with this and should not be organising races again. 1. Race described as flat. Joke! 2. Don't call people to the start if the course is not clear to start! (20 minutes of shivering is shocking and not conducive to a good time) 3. Only water on the way round? for that price.. poor. Oh no not all the way round as it ran out! 4. Mile markers, when present, were random and not accurate. Kinda important and not tricky! 5. Course was dangerously tight in loads of places on lap 2 and 3. 6. No clock 7. Oh and the idiot mother who pushed her pram out into the race and knocked me over! Baby unharmed thankfully. Some people should not be allowed to conceive.
Summary: Everything that was the organisers responsibility was screwed up and the only saving grace was the fantastic atmosphere from the locals on a damp day.
If you're going to test an event, then hold a test event and charge 10-15 quid. I signed up for this hoping for a GFA time and missed out by a minute due to the cold start, the hills, the bottlenecks and the imprint of MaxiCosi on my knee. Wasted weekend! Date of review: June 24, 2013
In short: Good Support, some good scenery in places, poor organisation In full: Start delayed by 20 minutes with no explanation to the people waiting on the start line. Route was very narrow in places with the two events meaning lots of overtaking needed. Date of review: June 24, 2013
