In short: Disappointing event. Organisation was below par and not what I would have expected. In full: This event was sour from the start when I queued for 60 minutes on the Monday to collect my race pack. This was quick as others took even longer!
I was in the last wave of runners to start this event and we started 20 minutes after the first wave. On a warm day this might not have been an issue but on the cold and overcast day any warm up was just a waste as you had cooled down by the time you started. They chap on the mic did nothing to motivate the runners in the last groups other than telling everyone that they could be over by the burger van eating a greasy burger on top of announcing the male and female competitors who were having to take toilet breaks in the neighbouring bushes because of the long delay to start.
The race was well marshalled but was hugely let down at the 5k water station for those later runners to arrive and find the was no water available. Most of the runners in these groups are the ones who would have really required the drink. Thankfully it was not as hot as the previous day. As I went by, desperate for a drink, I saw the scouts (through no fault of their own) picking up half drunk bottles to hand out. Very disappointing when they claim there was 10000 bottles. In hindsight I would now always carry some money so I could stop at a shop.
On completing the event you have to complete pretty much a full lap of the football stadium before you got a drink. There were no goodie bags with the usual energy bars etc just a load of promoters trying to stuff other events in your hand. There wasn't event a medal just a cheap polyester t shirt which was handed out before the event which the majority didn't even wear.
Overall very very disappointing for an event costing £20. My 5k fun run cost less and gave more. Come on Sporting Futures you can do better than this. Date of review: April 25, 2015
In short: I have taken part in every Derby 10K since 2011 and have looked forward to each one since, but have been increasingly disappointed as the route has changed each year seeming to take in less of the city centre and more of the industrial areas In full: I too am one of those who on arriving at the half way drinks station, found that there was no water left! Not a problem for me, but my 16 yr old daughter was running her first 10K and would have liked to have a drink and I am sure that the many people coming up behind me would have needed one.
I have got used to the two-wave start from previous years but this year's three-wave start was a big surprise and led to my daughter and I standing in the chilly, dull weather for what seemed like an age as the bloke on the microphone did nothing to cheer us up but instead reminded us how long we had to wait and told us to boo another bloke who seemed to only be doing what the organisers had told him to. I didn't want to be starting the Derby 10K with boos! The most appealing thing about previous years has been the party atmosphere at the start and the stadium finish in front of crowds.
What an anti-climax too! No goody bags, no t-shirt just people stuffing flyers for the next event in your hand as we left the stadium tunnels. Last year I think it cost £16, this year it cost £20 and to me seemed to be an inferior event and a poor experience. Date of review: April 23, 2015
In short: more bad than good In full: The Good:run on city roads, nice tee, chip timed, stadium finish. The Bad:obviously organised by non-runners. I got caught in that 1hr 20 wait on Monday for my race pack on my hour lunch break-thanks!!!!(first sign of things to come), no pre-race maps and just got a quick print out of some basic points with lots of glossy advert leaflets, long queue for toilet, poor signage, queue for baggage when it was found, no marshals to help direct, some looney on the lorry saying how to warm-up, "village" in a car park with vehicles parked everywhere, lined up then told to wait over 25mins getting cold, no halfway drinks left, no finish bag, no medal, poor atmosphere except stadium cheer for finish. Poor for high entry fee!
Anna - take a look at last year's event: http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/ratingsall.asp?sp=&v=2&ugn=13333&en=80228 ...maybe we should have been warned! Date of review: April 19, 2015
In short: Bit of a disastrous city event In full: The organisation was bit better today compared to the race pack debacle however it isl not worth doing again. The car parking was an improvement on the farce last year but the atmosphere was dull! No music, no entertainment, nothing for the kids except balloons and a warm-up far too early for my late wave start! We had certainly cooled down after the long wait. A simple ipod plugged in to some speakers would have done it!
The route was good and nice to see so many police back showing their support for sports events like the old days but for the 2nd yr, I didn’t get a well-needed drink at the drinks station as they ran out…..and there were loads of runners behind me who probably needed it more!
Once crossed the finish line, we were funnelled around in a good manner despite a crowd in a tight space (no pitch invasion this year!)…..to be give a bottle of water………and nothing……and nothing. We did get a t-shirt when collectig our race packs but what an anti-climax! What happened to all of those freebies, toiletries and goodie bag???? At least substitute this with a medal! In short: Not bad mid size city race In full: A twisty course through the city centre means a slow first 5k but the second 5k is quick along wide roads and embankment. Nice finish in the football stadium. Good that sub 35 runners got their own pen. Parking and organisation seemed fine. Good race for beginners. Date of review: September 5, 2009
In short: Enjoyed it, relatively Flat, proper Town race, Parking & Toliets abound - Start time sectioned, can avoid the many "fun runners" In full: Good location, race for all levels and can avoid or join in with the "First Time/Run Warm up"! Was get a crowded in the town but overall enjoyed it and did not impact on the time,Stadiumn finnish & 3/4 lap round the pitch was good. Good city centre race Date of review: April 26, 2009
In short: A race that doesn't really deliver its full potential. In full: Poor organisation, narrow routes, MP3 users, chaos near stadium all put me off doing this again. Nice try though could do a lot better.
A nice technical T-Shirt doesn't really make up for it I'm afraid. Date of review: April 26, 2009
