In short: Good fun and well supported In full: I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. The weather was foul early doors but OK for the race. Would have been very scenic with a bit of sunshine.
A very hilly race though, very few flat sections and it always felt as though I was running uphill or into a strong wind.
Managed a good time (for me) of 51:45 which makes me think I'll have no trouble breaking the 50:00 mark on a flat course.
I probably enjoyed the Langport race a little more than this one, but I shall certainly be running this event again next year. Date of review: November 1, 2009
In short: A run for charity or trophies? In full: Well done to Ilminster Lions and all the marshalls for setting up a course on a terrible early morning.
Thankfully, the rain stopped and the wind subsided by the 10:30 start so other than a bit of wet and mud under foot at some points on the course there were good race conditions.....and most people seemed very happy with their efforts at the end.
A little hiccup at the prize giving with the junior male and the female prizes being wrongly worked out did make the presentations a bit embarrassing BUT this is a charity race and I hope a goodly amount of money was raised and I look forward to returning.
WELL DONE Ilminster Lions. Date of review: November 1, 2009
In short: Well worth risking the gale In full: I was sure this was going to be a slog when I woke up to the sound of the wind and heavy rain at 6 in the morning. But this turned out to be one of my favourite races this year. The rain held off and the hedges kept the wind at bay (mostly). Good atmosphere with a nice mixture of club and non-affiliated runners. Some of the marshalls might have been a bit more animated and a lot of the residents just looked startled, but it's always easier running in these conditions than standing around cheering others on, I suppose. The soup at the end is always a nice touch. Date of review: November 1, 2009
In short: Lovely, undulating, rural course. Small field with good running company. Great support. In full: Torrential rain over the previous 24 hours did no-one any favours. The climbs in the middle section were dreadful, with so many muddy lagoons on either side of the road that single-file traffic was the only way up, and you couldn't overtake. But the rain held off during the race itself, and the course was delightful - as was the medal, soup and conversation thereafter. Date of review: December 11, 2005
In short: Well organised, good atmosphere, first 5.6Km uphill! In full: First 5.6Km uphill according to my Forerunner - a challenge at the beginning and quite hard work! Roads very wet - more like rivers in places as a result of the severe weather that morning! Still enjoyed it and the medal at the end was a nice surprise. Well orgnised. Will be there again next year I hope. Date of review: November 28, 2005
In short: Fantastic race, but don't tell too many people! In full: The Ilminster 10K is a real annual highlight fo me. The organisers are the friendliest and most enthusiastic I have come across, the marshalling is excellent, the course mildly challenging, the scenery great, and the groaning table with trophies just awesome. Add to this the fact they have a computer and printer on site and that you get the printed results, by position, time AND position in category just minutes after the prize giving...well what more could one want? Oh yes, and the results, in full, and in detail by category, on their website, together with a great photograph of the start, within, I think, just 36 hours. Other organisers could pay a visit and learn something at Ilminster. On the downside? Just this year, due to torrential rain, the finish had to be repositioned and was none too clear with several runners stopping and having to restart to run the final hundred meters. Overall, brilliant! Well done Ilminster Lions, once again. Date of review: November 12, 2005
In short: Great race - Needed a rope and a boat for the first half and a windsurfer for the second! In full: Well organised race, good atmosphere, challenging course, uphill to start but a great downhil last 5k. Well done to the Lions - excellent race - shame the weather made it more of a wade than a run!!! Will be back next year Date of review: November 6, 2005
