In short: great friendly race but so,so tough, though worth it for the views In full: forget the pbs, the hills mean that there is no chance but what an enjoyable race. Two really tough hills, first when leaving Swanage and heading towards Studland/Corfe and then on the backroads after Corfe but good thing with all that climbing is a last couple of glorious downhill miles to the finish. Lots of very friendly marshals and plenty of drink stations and fortunately i finished far enough up the field so that i had a choice of momentos - maybe the race organisers should advertise that only pre-entered runners are guarenteed momentos and any spares are then given out to day entries after the race (or just not accept day entries) to save them running out. In short: Nice course, great views once you reached the top of the climbs In full: Nice course, enough down hill sections to combat the uphills although I liked the climbs, good weather, well marshalled nice to start and finish on the sea front, kept my kids occupied while they waited for me to finish. In short: Lived up the "Tough but rewarding` heading In full: A gem of an event. Set on a challenging course but so rewarding afterwards. Can enter on the day BUT if I was to enter again I would want to make sure I had a number and enter beforehand. Loads of marshalls & the water / sponge stops were exactly where we needed them. Good finish. Very good mementos (well done to the organistors to send any to those who missed out). Great event - if you have the chance then enter. Many thanks for your hard work. In short: Tough Hilly course, great views, atmosphere & mementos In full: Great scenery to help distract you from the tough climbs on the course - at least there are plenty of downhill sections too. Good atmosphere amongst runners. Great marshalling with plenty water & sponge stations. Nice "Golden Trainer" memento. Will be back next year, God Willing. Date of review: July 19, 2010

In short: Fantastic scenery, tough course, what a buzz! In full: This was my first half marathon, so did not really know what to expect. Had trained for five months, would recommend plenty of hill training for this course as there are alot of them! Atmosphere was buzzing, the crowd were very uplifting throughout the run. Plenty of water stations and the cold sponges en route were a god send on such a warm day! Momento was rather nice glass paper weight thingy, makes a change from the usual medals or t-shirts. Loved this race and will be back next year to better my time (1:52:32). Would highly recommend this run for the scenery and the atmosphere, although quite tough for a first race. In short: Tough, but rewarding In full: I loved this one. By about 2 miles in it was obvious that a pb was out of the question (those hills were tough), so the pressure was off and I enjoyed it more because of that. Especially the run in to the finish. As far I was concerned the organisation was good. I got there early, registered and the memento made a nice change to usual medal.
Swanage is an absolute picture and I loved taking my baby girl on the steam train afterwards.
Here's an idea - ask the steam operators to run an early steam train that gets you to the start. Then everyone can park at the Norden railway station. Just a thought.
Otherwise - brilliant - I will do it next year. Date of review: July 19, 2010

In short: My first ever half marathon and it was fantastic!!! Very tough hills but marshalled fantastically and loads of support along the way In full: This was a great race for me. I still have a warm fuzzy feeling now! It was my first half marathon and my legs definitely didn't feel like my own after the second long long looooong hilly section. There were loads of very well manned water and sponge stations along the way and the seafront finish is definitely a great boost exactly when you need it!
As for the momentos - they said at the prizegiving that were loads more entries on the day than they had ever had before and that they would get more momentos made and would post them out to people. They couldn't have been more apologetic. I'm not sure how they plan to work out who didn't have them but I'm sure an email to the race secretary would be all it would take for those that missed out.
I had a fantastic time and will back for more next year (if my thighs ever stop aching......) Date of review: July 19, 2010

In full: All those people whinging about the admin (faultless) & shortage of mememtos shoule try organising a race themselves! Common sense should tell them that the organisers have a limited budget & with an unexpected high number of entrants on the day cannot tie up funds on mememtos that may not be needed. The organisers stated that those who had to go without would receive them later. What could be fairer? So act grown up & not like a spoilt child. My idea would be for pre-race day entrants to take priority over race day ones. Date of review: July 18, 2010

In short: Fantastically organised & friendly event In full: This was first Swanage Half & although probably one of the hardest halfs I have ever run, I will definitely be back next year fot the great atmosphere & excellent race organisation. Well done all those helped on the day & the days precedeing the event! Date of review: July 18, 2010
