In short: I had to come a long way for this ...GLAD I did!
In full: This was the second 5K that I've ever attempted, but the first BUPA organised race AND the first race I have run outside England.

NEGATIVE: I'm sure there wasn't a hill mentioned as being part of the race route, so obviously I wasn't prepared for that. Many runners will remember that there had been a lot of snowfall that month in Northern England and Scotland. Although it was new experience running on snow, I can tell you that it is quite simply energy-sapping and your legs begin to feel like jelly! Had this been a 10K run in the same conditions, I doubt whether I would have run continuously without stopping. The most negative aspect would most certainly have to be the baggage storage area ...NOT VERY SECURE! Organisers please take note.

POSITIVE: The organisers had done a very good job of clearing the roads/paths that were going to be raced on in the latter stages of the race. The marshalling was good as was the warm-up at the start by that chap on the high tower. The chip-timing worked well and the results were up fairly quickly.

GOODY BAG & MEDAL: The medal was solid metal, silvery/grey in colour about 6cm in diameter. It had all the event details on it in a sort of mural. The ribbon was of decent quality too, not likely to tear anytime soon. There were energy drinks and bottles of water available to all finishers plus the t-shirt in your size. There was also a re-usable hand warmer inside the drawcord bag too, which itself was BUPA branded.

If there is anyone considering running this race who is travelling from a long distance away, I'd recommend staying at the Travelodge closest to the venue. There'll be many other runners staying there and staff are very friendly and accommodating. They helped me find the prayer direction and they had the numbers of two halal take-aways too. The winning time was under 13 mins, if you want to medal, that's the standard to produce.

In short: Fabulous course
In full: Was a bit worried when everyone kept on about hte hill, but after running the Balmoral 10K the week before, this was a walk in the park!! Hill was long but not steep and great to get it out of the way at the beginning! Plenty to entertain on the way round and Edinburgh looked ownderful in the sunlight.
Only downside was that the finish was a bit of a scrum as I came in with a crowd of quite a few other runners,,,some channeling would have helped :)

In short: Challenging and rewarding scenic city 10k
In full: Best start/finish area yet, and nice to get the long hill out of the way early. All the ups have downs too. Good support virtually all the way around the course and Edinburgh is a great city for the weekend. Personally I like the t-shirt designs (I have run BUPA races for several years) but wish they were "technical" material, even if it meant increasing the entry fee. Well organised again, well done to Nova and all marshalls etc and Edinburgh City - see you next year.

In short: Excellent organisation. Wonderful City. Fantastic crowd! Thank you!
In full: Hill, Hill, Hillyville! Gosh I didn't train for that, however, I did it and in a great time too. Fabulous event. Thoroughly exhilarating! First race and it hasn't put me off.

In short: Excellent organisation, better route this year.
In full: Start and finish in Holyrood Park was excellent. Tough course to get a PB but thought this was the best route yet. Thought organisation was very good. Water station was well manned and clear distance markers throughout inc 800m marker at end. Goody bags were great and there was also additional free Powerade and muesli bars if required. My only gripe was the number of people walking at different parts of the course who started running in the first wave making it even more congested.

In short: really good new route. some challenging hills but with the nice weather and the city centre route it made for a great run. Bring on next year!

In short: Mind the hill
In full: Before you start the event the BUPA website warns you that you can expect an extra 2 minutes to be added to your usual PB and they are not kidding.
I'm a regular club runner and found this hellish - lots of hills and sharp descent i thought id left cross country season behind! I guess this is just the landscape of the city.

Other points of note
- A water "station" which consisted of 2 guys handing out bottles which i missed on the wrong side of the road
- No 800m and 400m count-down markers as with the Yorkshire and Sunderland 10k's (I didnt see them)
- Another generic, ugly looking, Grey Marl, BUPA T-shirt in the goodie bag - the same type as at all their event last year only with a different logo.
At least the baggage area was well guarded

In short: Undulating course that both challenged and rewarded.
In full: New start much improved this race. It was great to get the worst hill out of the way first and the rest of the uphill was rewarded by downhills. Well organised and really enjoyed it.
