In short: excellent race, with challenging hills In full: absolutely loved every minute of the race!
great organisation, superb and very enthusiastic marshals and a very scenic, varied and challenging course. ashamed to say i had to walk part of the 2 climbs, but with the HR going 180+ on the 2nd one, it was probs for the best ;-)
the course itself starts off in the expanse of the country park before skirting the pitch and putt golf course, then heading off into the trees for the first climb into the caravan park. there is then a short road (keeping to the pavement) section before dropping down a steepish tarmac lane back towards the park. the run into the park sees you pass underneath the impressive 19th century railway viaduct before heading back along the wide open grass of the main park. then it's under another railway bridge before piling back into the trees for the 2nd climb (i hadn't realised how steep this bit was, which is weird as i ride the MTB down it regularly) leading into some fields. these are skirted around and then it's pretty much all downhill or flat from here. the final mile is spent on one of the feeder paths back into the park before the sprint finish close to the newly created ponds by the main park carpark. in all, about 1 mile is tarmac with the rest being grassland and forest trails. ovetaking can be tricky on the trails as they are fairly narrow, however this is where the good old voice box mk1 gets used, and given that it's an MP3 free event, people have no problem hearing you ;-) hazards were helpfully spray painted orange, so the chance of accidentally running into / across these was lessened, and the course well marked out with no chance of going wrong.
goody bag at the end consisted of an event dated t-shirt, apple, mars bar, bottle of water and some flyers, which given the low cost of entry is no mean feat.
all in all, an excellent value event, set amongst some quality scenery and organised and run by a great bunch of people.
another event that will become a permanent fixture on my calendar.

In short: Varied coastal X-country - Challenging for all levels. Super value and friendly! In full: 2012 was my first year running in the Parkwood Porthkerry 5 mile race and I loved it - will definitely race it again at some point.
The course is challenging - two steep climbs, 90% off road, great scenery, potential for some boggy ground - unlikely to get your 5 mile PB here but that's not what it is about really...
The organisation is brilliant. Not overcrowded at the race start, decent enough toilet facilities, cafe, friendly club and great t-shirt!
If you want a tough, shorter cross-country race - give it a go! Date of review: May 15, 2012

In short: Thanks to all from Penarth and Dinas for putting on such a great off road race. The race itself is so well organised and such good value it's had to find any constructive comments to improve on it. Thank you. Date of review: May 13, 2012

In short: A great way to spend a Sunday morning In full: I did this in 2010 and had no hesitation in coming back for this year!
Excellent atmposphere and well marshalled on a course that's just challenging enough - 2 decent hills to tackle with fast downhill sections to look forward to.
I'll definitely be back next year! Date of review: May 9, 2011

In short: excellent multi terrain race for all In full: Ran this today in glorious sunshine though recent rain made it wet, muddy and slippery in some places. An excellent multi terrain 5 mile course with two steep hill sections. Despite this, it's suitable for all runners with PB potential for the experienced. Brilliantly organised and marshalled. Good facilities. Only downside is t-shirts in XL size (why?!) Date of review: May 8, 2011

In short: Beautiful day, great weather, lovely marshals In full: What a great day out but maybe not the best for a racing novice. The hills were absolutely tortuous but the wonderfully friendly and encouraging marshals more than made up for it and really helped cheer me along all the way to the finish. Will be back again next year but with some serious hill training under my belt. Brilliantly organised and a fantastic atmosphere. Date of review: April 18, 2010
