In short: Well organised, outstanding crowd, fantastic experience In full: Like the others that have reviewed the race so far I was completely taken aback by the crowd's encouragement and enthusiasm despite the wind and rain. You could hardly run for 5 minutes without seeing someone cheering you on. The marshalls and police also did a fantastic job keeping us moving and motivated as did Elvis at mile 13!
This was the first time I'd ran without music. There were clear warnings that earphones would lead to disqualification, but rightly so. The roads aren't closed so there is traffic to watch out for. The marshalls and police stopped traffic at crossings and gave instruction you couldn't afford to miss. I did think this would have a negative impact on my performance but not only did I manage a PB, I chatted to some fantastic people going round the course. Special thanks go to a certain jellybaby-munching primary teacher for her guide to Jersey as we went round(!)
The course was well marked, plenty of drink stations (and notice they were coming up), brilliant atmosphere at the finish line, great goody-bag and best finishing medal I've had yet.
I couldn't recommend running this race enough to people. There were plenty of newbies so don't be put off by the smaller volume of enrants. I've ran Edinburgh twice and very much preferred Jersey as it felt more personal and welcoming. Date of review: October 18, 2010

In short: Absolutely brilliant first marathon experience In full: Despite heavy rain in the first half, the support was excellent - people were friendly and encouraging and gave you a lift when you needed it. Drinks stations plentiful, marshalling excellent. At the pasta party we met a couple who were marshalling and he had to get up at 2AM to put the mile markers out and then stand for hours in the rain - I think all the runners really appreciated the support. First time in Jersey - great scenery, great people. We were kept going in the last 6 miles by lots of shouts of encouragement and it was a huge lift to get big cheers over the last few hundred yards. Thanks to all who gave up their time to make this really special. Date of review: October 10, 2010

In short: Super supporters made this race! In full: Great organisation and support from marshalls and locals made this race go by relatively quickly. I was getting tired of thanking people for their support - what a nice thing to have to say about a marathon. Runners were never far away from the next supporter clapping and encouraging, even in the heavy rain during the first half. The atmosphere at the finish was brilliant. No mass finish as it's a relatively small marathon, which meant each finisher was greeted by a huge roar from the crowd. Bloody brilliant, felt like I'd finished an IM! In short: A marvelous first time marathon experience In full: I had not expected to enjoy running a marathon but I can honestly say the first 22 miles were exhilarating. The support from fellow runners made the miles fly past. A huge thank you to Gary and Linda in particular who kept my spirits up for at least ten miles of the course. It must have been uncomfortable for the marshalls, Police and supporters along the route standing out in the rain but they were fantastic. They did an excellent job of motivating the runners. I was one of the slower runners and could well have understood if people had gotten fed up by the time I reached the water stations but if this was the case it certainly didn't show. People seemed incredibly enthusiastic and really helped me to continue running. All in all a fabulous experience. Date of review: October 5, 2010

In short: Once again an event that all of Jersey can be proud of In full: Having raced last year in glorious sunshine we had the other side this year with lashing rain and brisk winds. This didn't put off the wonderful people of Jersey who turned out in numbers to encourage and cheer on the runners. Once again the course was excellently marshalled by hundred of very enthusiastic volunteers. Many thanks for those words of encouragement when my energy levels were badly flagging. Thanks also to Elvis at the halfway mark who raised a smile and morale. A wonderful race and one that everyone should try to do. Date of review: October 5, 2010

In short: Fantastic event - can't say more than that really! In full: I've run a few big city marathons and with them, you always get the people who have just come to watch rather than actively support - but you could not say that about Jersey. Everyone from the marshals to the helpers en route, to tiny children by the roadside and even people out for a Sunday stroll along the seafront was encouraging every single runner - it was a novelty that really made the race. It made the miles fly by and gave me such a buzz as I was ploughing through the rain. It was wet for the first half of the race, but it actually kept things nice and cool rather than being a hindrance. And with the second half of the race somewhat easier than the first, it is made for a negative split, which is always good for the mind. The three and a half miles along a glorious seaside cyclepath from mile 22.5 onwards did drag somewhat, but you can say that about the end of any marathon, and having stunning scenery as a backdrop did make them go slightly quicker. A great atmosphere in the centre of St Helier for the finish completed a fantastic day, with a great medal, T-shirt and goody bag to boot. All in all, a brilliant event and I'll sing its praises to anyone who asks. Date of review: October 4, 2010
