In short: DANGEROUS B4009 WALLINGFORD ROAD CROSSING In full: DANGEROUS B4009 WALLINGFORD ROAD CROSSING
This years Goring 10km, I experienced a very dangerous occurance during the race. At around the 2.5km mark, I had just crossed the B4009 road. The event marshals decided to stop the ongoing runners and release the vehicles to continue their journey.
I found this incredibly dangerous for the safety of the runners. To put this in perspective. This event is advertised as early as January this year and runners enjoy this scenic and hill climb route for PB's and Reading Half Marathon training. A runner who paid for this event has the right to achieve their best in the race and to be safe throughout.
Personally I think the marshals should be rebriefed for next years event and take safety actions for the runners involved in crossing the road. It is the marshals responsibility for safe guarding the runners, not the vehicles. Date of review: March 16, 2016
In short: Fine village event and race In full: Not sure why there are no other reviews for this one, it's been going for years. Anyway ... this is a fun 10K with a course that's hilly but not a killer. The basics are all there: good baggage stow, plenty of loos, lots of marshalls and a bit of bling. Great finish on the village green with the kids handing out cakes (very nice cakes). Results online by evening with full breakdown by time and category. Excellent race, been doing it for over a decade and will be back next year. Date of review: March 13, 2016
In short: Awesome scenery and clockwork organisation In full: What a fantastic race. There were bananas available before the start, bananas, jelly babies and flapjacks (ooohhhhh flapjacks) at the end as well as a free cup of tea or coffee. But it wasn't all about the food, the organisation was like clockwork, the inclnes (not real hills) seemed to fly past amongst the South Oxfordshire countryside. I had a negative split and a very satisfying comeback race. Life doesn't get much better than that (especially with a flapjack in your hand!!) Date of review: March 6, 2013
In short: Hilly yet enjoyable In full: Second time running this race. Much better weather than last year and it seemed to run more smoothly too overall. Bit crowded on the first km uphill but once it opened up it was great. Good support from locals around the course and marshalls were very good. Wouldn't say its the ideal race for beginners or those looking for PBs due to big hills at the start and the 7km mark but there is some excellent downhill parts too of course. Good finishing area with commentator mentioning people by name as they came in, and free flapjacks, bananas and jelly babies once you've handed in your chip. will definitely be back next year. In short: Exceptionally friendly with a flapjack at the end. In full: I've run most of the local 10Ks but never got around to this, probably because it's early in the season and I'm basically lazy and don't particularly like being wet or cold. I signed up because I'd been put off by a lousy race along a busy main road last July and barely run since. I needed to scare myself back into my kit and a race number was the only option. Even when I got there I became convinced I was going to suffer horribly because I'd worn trail shoes and very little is actually off-road, plus I was freezing. I needn't have worried. My shoes did the job fine, it was my frozen feet that were the issue and when they eventually defrosted around the 5K mark I realised I didn't appear to be getting blistered after all. From the word go the people in the race were friendly and all the way round the marshalls cheered as did groups of locals and their children. Sometimes they just happened to be out, getting into their car or walking along, but all had an encouraging word to offer. When I made it to the end I was welcomed by name and given a flapjack. It really couldn't have been a better start to my season. Thank you Goring, thank you. Date of review: March 3, 2013
In short: A nice little village green race In full: The start was a little congested but otherwise a fine little race, good start and finish venue and decent weather for a change. Smooth organization as always, and the flapjacks and jelly babies at the finish were a touch of class :-) Date of review: March 3, 2013
