In short: Scenic course, fairly hilly, good organisation. In full: A nice course on country lanes. Hilly for about the first 6k, but not steep hills. Just a gradual undulation. Free entry to show is great. The show is fun, with loads of animals to look at, & good homemade food in the food halls. Lots of nice things to buy from the craft stalls. Good organisation. Good marshaling. One to make a whole day of. (I now have about 700 photos of pedigree chickens on my camera!!) Date of review: September 12, 2010
In short: A GRAND DAY OUT! In full: Course different from 2008 (when I last ran here). Fewer 'inclines',& more flattish, stretches now. Personally, I preferred the old course where you really could go 'Hell for Leather' back down into Penistone after you'd done the climbing. That said, this new course gives more stunning views of the surrounding area & is probably more 'do-able' for less experienced runners. It just depends what you're looking for in a race. Excellent organisation, T-shirt & FAB day at the Show (runners get into show FOC). As good as you'll get really for A GRAND DAY OUT! Date of review: September 12, 2010
In short: Great race - tough first half, fast second half In full: Change to the route was a good improvement. The first half of the route is pretty tough if you aren't expecting it but the second half is pure speed assuming you've got something left in your legs.
Have a couple of well earned beers looking round the show after too. It all makes for a great day. Date of review: September 13, 2009
In short: Shall we say...challenging! In full: Seriously, this run isn't for the faint hearted, but for some strange reason I love it. The first 6k is predominantly up hill, the last 4k down, but it's certainly not impossible and the views take your mind off the pain. The revised route is a good improvement. In full: Not a club runner & did feel out of place a bit. It was well organized & good value for the money. It was a challenenging run but we are in Sheffield / Barnsley so we should expect hills should we not ! Date of review: September 12, 2009
In short: Killer hills both up & down. One for the strangely perverted In full: Overall this is a great run, if one of the tougher ones you'll come across. Long hills, both steep & nearly as steep up to 7k, then some leg jarring downhills between 8&9. Last k is a necessary but not particularly scenic trek thru the streets of Penistone & the last couple of corners were poorly marshalled and fraught with wandering pedestrians. The last k apart, a great run and astonishingly good value. A great day out for all the family. Date of review: September 15, 2008
In short: Onwards and Upwards.... In full: A very well organised, friendly race. First 7K is a slog uphill, and the last 3K is downhill. Views on the way up and down, particularly around the 6-7K were beautiful - almost worth the slog to get up there! Marshals were excellent - supportive particularly to those of us towards the rear of the field, and some friendly locals joined in with the encouragement too. Entry to the Penistone show makes this a great value for money event - pity it chucked it down this year! The T shirt will come in handy for being spotted on winter evening runs...
I'll do this one again for sure. Date of review: September 15, 2008
In short: Hills, Hills, Hills In full: Unexpectedly warm weather, expectedly long hills. Great views and friendly runners. Fee included entry to Penistone Show, a bargin. A definate one for next year. Date of review: September 13, 2008
In short: Tough but satifying! In full: Well organised & mainly on quiet roads although the last km is busy with cars & pedestrians. Parking tricky, I would recommend coming on the train if you can. T-shirt a rather horrific shade of yellow. Date of review: September 13, 2008
