In short: Tough course, but only if you can find it! In full: Really good race, hobbling into work the next day is always the sign of a tough course!
Getting There I was coming from Leicester, so I set out to get a late entry on the day which there were no problems with.... but I couldn't find the event location for the life of me! I thought I'd drive into Ashbourne, then pick up signs from there... I was well rehearsed where there was a Rug Sale (you know, just incase! maybe thats where the party was at?) but I couldn't find any signs at all.... It was only when I found a 12 mile marker 45mins of driving around that I got there on time.
The Race Started out in the road outside the event and soon went into the peaks... There were plenty of hills and a few sniggers from the locals at the top of Blore hill; but it was all good fun and a nice relaxing atmosphere. When I got to mile 12, there were quite a few people around and I lost sight of the people ahead of me. There was a sign that said "runners keep left" so I kept left, then the Marshall said that was the wrong way!? (just near a bus stop).... other than that, the race and course itself was pretty good.
All subject to personal opinion (of course!) Course: 9/10 Organisation/Planning/Location: 7/10 Date of review: October 12, 2010
In short: How many hills!! Toughest half marathon I have ever done. In full: Extremely well organised, start was excellent, everything seemed to go like clockwork. Very friendly marsalls who encouraged all the way round. Killer hills, both up & down but scenery was gorgeous. Well done to all involved, one I would do again. Date of review: September 14, 2009
In short: Couple of tough hills In full: No problems with the start this year and all the marshals did a very good job. Plenty of water stops. The scenery was gorgeous. Got to Blore just after the big hill and then ran as fast as I could and got a PB. A very good race. Date of review: September 13, 2009
In short: Most scenic race I've ever done. Just sort out the start!! In full: After having thought the Leek 1/2 a couple of weeks beforehand was scenic, this blew me away. Hills - yes, lots of 'em. But what views!!
As many others have stated, the start could have been handled better. The man with the PA (he seemed to love the sound of his own voice) requested that runners stay off the road in the adjacent playing field until directed to. When the order was given to move onto the road, many were still making their way out of the playing field. Comical, but also annoying.
Anyway, a lovely race. A despite the hills, a PB!! I'll be back. Date of review: October 16, 2008
In short: Very enjoyable race. Come next year !!! In full: Very friendly, slightly chaotic at the start, scenic and challenging, I'm sure more entrants would be appreciated !!! Date of review: September 16, 2008
In short: Glorious views and big hills In full: Demanding course, but the most scenic race I have run, especially around half way before you drop down into the valley (and then climb back out again!) Only minor gripe is the lack of baggage facilities, when the race pack had said this would be provided (I left my bag with the refreshments people!) Date of review: September 16, 2008
In short: A fine race, almost as good as off-road In full: A fine race, especially for those (like me) who don't really do road running. Yes, the start was a bit shambolic but I always time myself so I don't really see what the fuss is about Date of review: September 15, 2008
In short: Nice course In full: nice course, good views, well marshalled, few people out to give you a cheer which was nice, enjoyable day out, OH enjoyed looking round Ashbourne too while I was running so she was happy too! Pity about the poor organisation at the start Date of review: September 15, 2008
In short: Painfull hills but the scenery made up for that. In full: Really enjoyed this race. Hilly and scenic. Had a few problems finding the start as I am not from the area so a few more signs would have been nice but over all a fantastic if not painful day. Well done all involved Date of review: September 14, 2008
