In short: Superbly organised and very generous
In full: My first LDWA event and it won't be my last. Route instructions were flawless - I had no problem following them. Scenery was beautiful, organisation was fantastic and friendly (lift to and from station, variety of sandwiches (including chocolate!) at checkpoints and a full meal afterwards. I wouldn't expect a medal as it's not a race and is great as it is.

In full: Sun was shinning showing the full colours of Autumn you don't do this to race but to spend the day navigating the hills with brillant marshalls and checkpoints and the company of other like minded people.

In full: If you are rinning the event training is a must as very hilly, some to steep to run but the joy if this challenge is you could walk the hills then set your pace again. We got lost twice, but so many people seemed to be about to help. The food was so lovely, cakes, sweets, and tea. As a non member we were treated very well. Even though it was tough i loved it!

In short: Fabulous
In full: I entered this race as a walker. Fantastic scenery. Brilliant bread pudding. Superb marshalls who dealt patiently even with duffers like me who ended up getting lost at almost every turn. Luckily in the morning I teamed up with a crack team of Anne and Joan with their Red Setter dog who managed to steer me round some of the more hazardous route decisions. I somehow managed the second stage on my own without any supervision and then later on, was kindly guided by Rebecca with her GPS. Even later (after it had got dark), we were finally escorted back to the race Headquarters by three of the LDWA guys wearing head torches and were then awarded a standing ovation by their colleagues as we walked through the doors! I was quite choked - or was it the soup and pasta that they had prepared for all the finishers in the canteen? Came joint last, but I don't care. Much. It was a fabulous, fabulous, day out. Do it.

In short: My first marathon and I made it.
In full: Just started jogging 6 months ago, this is my first marathon and the longest distance I've ever jogged or walked. Could not follow the route description to save my life (I must have covered 28 miles the number of times I got lost), but the hardcore walkers were brilliant. Do not attempt this challenge if it is your first marathon, unless your mad, which I must be as I had a smile on my face when I reached the finish. The scenery is too die for. I'm glad I completed some 3,000 ft ascent.

I'm disappointed I didn't get a medal only a certificate, as this must be the mother of all marathons.

Thanks to the marshals and special thanks to LDWA walkers I had the pleasure of meeting.

Life is a challenge not a race!

In short: Glorious scenery, great organization and amazing value for money!
In full: This was my first LDWA event, and it definitely won't be my last! This was a great alternative to a normal training run, and although not really a race, it was great to run round some superb scenery and fend for yourself by following the route descriptions. Whilst this added on more time.....who cares? More time to enjoy the views, and the delicious spread of food at the checkpoints! The banquet of food at the end was just what I needed after 26 undulating miles. Amazing value, I'll definitely be back for me of these! Thank you to all the organisers.

In short: Very friendly,
In full: Excellent atmosphere. The checkpoints were excellent with really good drinks and high calorie food available. The chocolate sarnies at checkpoint 2 were great, thanks. I also liked the extra effort put in by the organisers with the provision of a hot plate of pasta, fruit salad and a cup of soup (all optional). I would have preferred a medal to a certificate, that was a bit of a let down but ho hum. Thanks again.

In short: Best value race there is in glorious scenery...
In full: The LDWA events are very well run indeed and if you are a member and sign up in advance the fee is a mere £5 a person, even on the day for non members is just £9.

Basically you get given a route description which gives you a turn by turn set of instructions, lots of BL, TK, TR and BW but you soon get the hang of the navigation. (Though you always have to be very aware of going awry, at 23 miles the last thing you need is a wrong turn!) This is the key difference with these events versus a big marathon, you're navigating yourself round the course to a number of checkpoints along a whole variety of paths and trails and very, very little on roads.

The course was incredibly scenic, (which equates to hilly! 3000' of ascent), weather was perfect and the food laid on at the beginning, check points and end was fantastic! Rather too nice in fact as it made one want to hang out at the check points nibbling!

Very friendly atmosphere, organizers, marshalls and volunteers absolutely first class and can't speak too highly of these events.

Well worth a go if you want a change from pounding the streets and getting out in some glorious countryside!

In full: The Mole Valley, Box Hill, Headley Heath, Mogador Common, Epsom Downs, Staine Street, Denbies, Ranmore, and so much more. All in one day beautiful day.
