In short: Beautiful run on a very hot day In full: Very beautiful road route on country lanes outside Alton. Not closed roads but very few cars on the route. Lots of cyclists though! It was a very hot day (26degC) Very club oriented event as its part of Hants League but it's very well organised and very friendly so no reason why beginners shouldn't have a lovely day. In short: A lovely 10 mile road race In full: This was my first race after starting running at the beginning of 2012 and was told i was 'brave' !! Ahh it wasnt that scary in fact its a must do for me each year seeing as i live in Alton. The funny thing for me with this race is i end up doing it a week or so after the London marathon thinking 10 miler after 26 will be a doddle and each year i think that it completely bites me on the arse!! Not that its the hilliest road race nor the flattest but it does test you and i like that theres plenty of lovely scenery and the roads are fairly quiet as there are no road closures with this one thats a bonus. Drink stations run by the local scouts and guides with plenty of encouragement and water. Plenty of marshalls on hand its well run and always goes smoothly. All in all this is a great 10 miler its just a bit tougher than it looks in my opinion and theres nothing wrong with that you don't want it handed to you on a plate!!! In short: As good as it gets for a race like this In full: This really is an excellent example of a locally-organised 10 mile race. No flashy gimmicks, gaudy medals or pointless goody-bags, this is simply a well-run and enjoyable event. The organisation was spot on, with the school providing an excellent base. The course is very scenic, though the hills mean that this isn't one for the PB-chasers. The average standard here is pretty high but it is by no means an "exclusive" event, with slowcoaches like me getting just as enjoyable experience as those at the front of the pack. Pretty hard to see what you would change for this one. Also, I should give credit to the marshalls and particularly the cubs/ scouts manning the water stations, who did a really good job. In short: Challenging run! In full: This was my first time running the Alton Ten and I was shocked by the amount of club racers! As a non-club member I was definitely in a minority, but that's not really a bad thing.
Race was tough with lots of inclines and declines, and I was shocked in the last mile when I realised I was heading for a PB, and I managed to scrape over a minute of my previous time.
Organisation could have been better - as a previous comment states, the safety instructions at the start were impossible to hear, and as someone who was close to the front at the start, I couldn't make out what was being said at all.
No goody bag, but in all a challenging and fast race, partly due to the quality of the runners! Date of review: May 17, 2014
In short: A fairly challenging race, especially in the windy conditions In full: A well organised race, including ample parking. The marshall directing cars onto the field was doing a good job, but wasn't wearing a marshalls yellow bib. I think this made his job harder, as drivers weren't sure whether he "was official."
It was impossible to hear instructions at the start, even though I was standing near the front. This needs to be addressed, in future, as important safety information etc. is given out then.
Excellent service at the water stations and great encouragement from the helpers.
Disappointed however, at the lack of spectators to encourage us on route. Date of review: May 13, 2014
In short: challenging run but worth the effort In full: challenging run through very pretty countryside! managed to run all the way without walking this year which is a pb for me! thanks to all marshalls and big shout out to water station scouts! thanks also to toilet guy who opened up extra lady loos! In short: Great race with good support from marshals and the scouts. Undulating is under-rated...very hilly. In full: Really enjoyed this race. I have never even ran 5 or 10k, so as a real newbie I was a little intimidated but the marshals and competitors kept me going. Special thanks to the helpers at the water stops and the scouts who really kept me going. Lovely words of encouragement. Date of review: May 12, 2014
In short: A challenging 10 mile run with lots of undulation and a few steep bits. Good parking, timely start, nice meda and plenty of water stops. However substandard pre race communication and not even a free banana at the finish all food had to be purchased! Date of review: May 11, 2014
In short: Great rural road race with lots of ups and downs In full: A good little event this. Nice rural course with little traffic to contend with except on one very short stretch. It is continuously up and down so don't fly off at the start. The start has moved since the last time and so had the parking but it seemed to work ok. Refreshments laid on my the scouts but this whole affair is pretty low-key but good. Date of review: June 11, 2012
