In short: It will be much better next year. Date for your diary 16th November 2008 In full: Dear Runner, I am writing to you as Race Director of the recent Thorpe Park race and a member of the Cleethorpes Athletic Club Committee.
First of all, I would like to apologise to you for the difficulties you experienced on the 18 November, with the shortened course, which directly led to the kilometre banners in the race appearing in a confusing position for you. There was some confusion over a few of the prizes awarded in certain categories and I understand that some of you may have left without collecting your t-shirt memento. I know how much time, effort and energy goes into preparing to run a race like this, so I am sorry if you feel that this has been wasted on this occasion.
Our Race Committee met recently to review everything that happened on the day. Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback, positive and negative, as this was helpful to ensure we held an accurate and honest review. The main points that the Race Committee made were: - to publicly apologise if the day didn’t work out as you had planned it; review our marshalling position for next year; review the actual course for next year; ensure everyone who ran receives a t-shirt; finally, as way of an apology and a thank you for the continued support of runners, a discount of £2 against the New Year Day 10k or next year’s Thorpe Park 10K.
If you didn’t collect a t-shirt on the day, please contact me at
Thank you to everyone who has sent letters of support, following the run. These have come from many different athletic and running clubs as well as from individual runners and offered backing, support and encouragement. It is reassuring to know that there is still such a high level of interest in road running and a desire to see the sport prosper in the future.
Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you at Cleethorpes 2008 New Years Day 10K race and next year’s Thorpe Park 10K race.
In short: Definate PB course shame about organisation In full: This is a fast and flat race but it ended up not been 10k but 5.2 miles! May come bck next year but organisation and value have a lot to be desired Date of review: December 1, 2007
In short: Organisation was terrible, 10k race only measured 5.2 miles. In full: Shame about this race could have been good if it was the right distance and better organisation is required. Next year try starting the two races at different time. Date of review: November 29, 2007
In short: Confused run - but defintely PB material In full: I was looking forward to this race for some time. Having spent some time at one of these Holiday parks previously i knew it would be a good route. PRO's Good course, excellent facilities, the showbar was good with proper toilets. Marshalls were cheerful and good crowd of varying abilities - good for a first timer. Ok T-shirt
Cons. Car parking not open-due to pleasure island No megaphone-so couldnt hear the starter. Suppose to be traffic free route but cars were on route Wrong route been used causing other issues.wrong signage, thought 5k finish was 10k finish..... No water station but could have been due to the wrong route been used. No start time for 10k on detail form issued with number The attitude of some of the runners STUNK. a mistake was made and it wasn't deliberate- voice concern but no need to be rude
Summary The mistake was seen early on and a soloution put in place. This will be a good run once the mistakes have been rectified and will be one i wil return too next year as its nice and flat and has PB potential thanks to the marshals who turned out in pretty horrible conditions windy and raining Date of review: November 21, 2007
In short: Potential to be much better In full: There were a few confusing things that I am sure will be much improved next year. Definate PB potential. I agree with some of the previous comments. I would like to thank the marshalls for their encouragment and the organisers for trying to put on a new event. Looking forward to next year. Date of review: November 20, 2007
In short: Some Hiccups But They Were Apologised for In full: Lovely Warm Showbar to wait in with nice toilets (not portaloos). Map of course on notice board everyone was looking at. Unfortunately we got sent the wrong way missing 1 mile out - but this was apologied for back in the Showbar afterwards, and discounted entry given for their NYD run - bonus!!! Thanks to all Marshalls standing around in cold, wet, windy weather - would you do it? Date of review: November 20, 2007
In short: Good course for beginners and PB's In full: Mistakes happen and the organisers can hardly be blamed for the weather! I hope this year doesn't put people off entering next year. Date of review: November 19, 2007
