In short: An excellent hilly challenge In full: My first ultra distance event and really enjoyed it. Needs good map reading/orienteering skills or a few reccees. Excellent organisation by the S wales LDWA, who braved the support stations in challenging weather. Date of review: July 6, 2009

In short: Hilly and challenging! In full: A very hilly challenge. I am feeling it today with the aches and pains! Challenge requires fairly good map or direction skills. Mixed weather especially up on those trig points! Great value for money and plenty of cake to go around. Well looked after all the way around and food at the start/finish. Great company. Thank you LDWA. Well done. Date of review: July 5, 2009

In short: Beautiful course but hard due to hills and mud - great value In full: A very enjoyable event, despite rain towards the end. As always for LDWA events very well organised, friendly and unbelievably good value. Beautiful countryside and great views (at the price of some testing climbs) - the mud and hills made it quite a challenge. Date of review: July 7, 2008

In short: Fantastic In full: My partner did the 21 mile version and despite her minimal experience in navigation, completed it with no major problems. I did the 31 mile route which had twice the ascent that the 21 mile had. This extra 3000 ft was crammed into the 10 miles that were not shared with the other run. There were sections here that definitely were not runnable. (How I laughed as the nettles stung the open wounds ripped in my legs by all the brambles!)The feed stations were excellent with friendly staff there to ply you with a seemingly endless supply of fruit, cakes and drinks. (You could easily eat your way through the entry fee!) The route description was easy to follow although some vagueries meant you needed to engage your brain throughout so this wasn't just a mindless plod. All in all, we both had an excellent day. Just one point though: I believe that people would have gladly paid a larger entry fee in order to get a tee shirt at the end. Date of review: August 9, 2006

In short: A little gem of an event In full: Remember it's an event not a race! Best way to think of it is a long training run with well placed stops for drinks, cakes and a chat. The scenery is great and even if you are a local you will discover somewhere new. The 21 can be run but the 31 has a lot of very rough paths that can only be walked - hence few manage quicker than 8 hours. The event is organised with great pride and hospitality by the local long distance walkers. Why travel to pound the tarmac when mud and magic is on your doorstep. Date of review: August 7, 2006

In short: A wonderful way to spend a Saturday! In full: A wonderful experience, very friendly and John (the organiser) bent over backwards to help with accommodation. All water stations flowing with goodies/treats considering the £5 entry fee. Amazing views, but very tough up the hills and you must be good at following directions as there are no marshals!! There is a great handout with instructions for the route, luckily for us though we found some locals who knew what they were doing. All in all a wonderful run. Date of review: August 6, 2006

In short: an unforgettable adventure! In full: Great race. Scenery was fantastic, great to explore new places I didn’t know existed. The route description was spot on (though there were a few missing styles which threw me), and the organisers fantastic, so much food! I left each manned check point feeling like I’d had a full meal, which gave me the energy I needed to get up those mountains. Very rough ground at times, legs are ripped to shreds from nettles and brambles, but that just made it all the more fun! My first ultra, but definitely not my last. Will be back next year!
