In short: Amazing. Tough. Sign me up for next year! In full: A wonderful marathon with amazing views and great organisation. The weather was beautiful which helped this year, but I am sure this would still be great on a dull day. The views from Portland are amazing and would be hard to be beaten from anywhere else. The trails were good and I didn't have any problems with footing, and I was only wearing my normal racing flats, not trail shoes. The course is very tough, but very rewarding. I enjoy hills, so this was a great challenge. I liked having a flat 6 miles in the middle of the course to calm down, although I know that others did not enjoy this as much. Cramp kicked in very early and made the second half extremely challenging, but that helps to make the achievement of finishing even greater. Not a marathon to beat your PB, but certainly one that you will not forget in a hurry! Looking forward to beating my time in 2016. Date of review: May 6, 2015
In short: Breath-taking coastal scenery. Very friendly and organised crew. Tough terrain but so worth rewarding. Loved it. In full: This was my first race (I thought I’d start with a marathon). I hadn’t trained for a month and a half due to a bad cold. I almost didn’t turn up. I was so glad that I did…
The weather was stunning but not too hot. The crew were so very friendly and informative and the course was clearly laid out (just one wrong turn for me but I’m somewhat directionally challenged, so I may have missed a sign). The support from the general public, other racers’ families and from all the other racers was amazing – it really spurred me on.
The terrain was hilly in places but when compared to other parts of the Jurassic Coast it was pretty tame. The views, on the other hand were spectacular. Such a dramatic coastline, and you get to see it all again on the reverse loop of the island.
Not a fast course but certainly memorable. I’m putting my name down for 2016.
In short: I'd echo all the other positive reviews - LOVED this event In full: I know Portland well, the course actually passes my friend's house and it is an Island I love. It is beautiful. I've ran there before (the local club have an event in the summer) so knew it would be tough and it was. This event is brutal and shouldn't be underestimated but it is worth it for the amazing course and scenery. The other reviews sum it up and mean that this event will likely score very high in RW's end of year 'best of lists' and rightly so. I'll be back next year, might even be brave enough to enter the full! Date of review: February 23, 2015
In short: Stunning-loved it! In full: Having lived in Weymouth 10 years I had never been around the Portland Coast. I was amazed at how stunning and dramatic the scenery was. It was really uplifting and I really enjoyed. The mixed terrain made it interesting and exciting and I wished on the day that I was doing the full not the half. I will definitely return to do the full next year. Keen to get into more cross country now father that! Excellent organisation and very well looked after at the feeding stations!! In full: This is a super tough course, 3 days later and my legs are still a bit sore!!! It's also a beautiful course with stunning views along the Jurassic coastline and out to sea. Those views help, as did the great friendly banter and support from the marshalls. They were able to draw a smile despite the pain. Fantastic organisation, lots nutrition available, massages, goodies at the end...Proud to own the medal...It doesn't get much better than this. Date of review: February 18, 2015
