In short: Great race on closed roads In full: This is a fantastic race. The best 10km I have done. It is exceptionally well organised.
Roads are closed, and there is a good mix of serious club runners and fun runners.
It has a reputation as being a very tough course. I think the reputation is a bit unfair. It is challenging, yes, but by no means ridiculous. The toughest bit is during the climb into Hill Wootton (the clue is in the name, I guess!)It's definitely not a 'slow' course though - the closed roads and presence of decent runners offset the elevation factor, I would say.
Starting in one Castle and finishing in another... what more could you want?! I will do this race every year until my legs fall off!
In short: Glorious point to point run with a big field of varying abilities In full: A lovely race with great potential, but after 25 years of being on the calender, there were a couple of issues that should really have been resolved by now:
My first gripe is the organisation at the finish. Any point to point race will have logistical issues with regard to bag and competitor transfers and seeing other posts it appears this was a challenge, however as i was meeting someone at the finish, the cramped nature of Kenilworth Castle meant it was difficult to meet up and incredibly busy.
If like me, you'd left a bit too much out on the Warwickshire roads, I could really have done with something more than a bottle of water at the finish. As I'd arranged to meet up, i hadnt got any energy supplies with me or any cash with which to purchase any. The 'goody bag' was well short on substance and i would have rather opted for a banana or cereal bar than another printed T shirt.
The event isn't hugely spectator friendly - Friends and family aren't allowed in Warwick Castle at the start and the whole of Kenilworth seems to have been on lock down, so by the time my father arrived, he had to park around 1.5 miles away and missed the finish!
This race has the potential to be one of your annual highlights, but I would be learning a lot of lessons before i did it again. Date of review: June 11, 2013
In short: Lovely slightly hilly run between Warwick and Kenilworth In full: First time I've done this race since 2010 and its popularity seems to have exploded in the last few years. A slight tweak to the route improved things this year in my opinion and the start and finish within the castle grounds as always make the race that little bit special. The people of Warwick and especially Kenilworth turned out in force and I loved the unofficial 'jelly baby station' in someone's front garden in Kenilworth - fabulous!
My only gripe this year was that the buses back to Warwick took forever to arrive. Maybe sort that out for next year please? It was the one annoyance over a pretty much otherwise perfect race! Date of review: June 10, 2013
In short: Fantastic race, great support and well organised In full: This was my second year of this race. This time there were around 4000 runners. Generally well organised. Frustrating at start, I positioned myself at 40 minute mark, yet when we got going I was overtaking 100s of runners who had obviously ignoring the signs. Next year I am chaing tactics and just going up front. This year having to navigate past 100s of runners lost me at least 3 minutes off my chip time, and around 7 minutes off guntime. Also, chaos at the end when we had a disorganised scrum, to get on the very delayed buses back to Warwick Castle. It really was very man for themselves! I would however do it again, one of the highlights on race calendar for me! Date of review: June 10, 2013
In short: The best 10k I have ever ran, by a country mile! In full: Superb race between Warwick and Kenilworth castles. Very well organised, fantastic scenery, and great, friendly support from the local communities too. See you next year! Date of review: June 27, 2012
In short: Great race but early start In full: I really enjoyed this race again but I was a little confused about the request that runners turned up an hour and a half before the start. I can see how this makes things easier for the organisers but they were lucky that the weather was fine. A month earlier I had been on the start line of the Stratford Marathon just down the road in the arctic conditions!! I still really liked this course though. Some decent hills but a great atmosphere. In short: Very Good route and well marshalled but shame for spectators In full: Overall good route and very challenging with a few hills, nice to villagers out supporting and cheering you round and handing out jellied sweets and water. Fantastic support from them. my only gripe is the organinsation for spectators with the runners, no one was allowed in the castle which could of been made well aware when you have people coming through the main entrance and then finding out half way through they were not allowed in, there was no proper signs for spectators and not very easy for 1st timers and every Marshall they came across didn't really give any useful information. Parking for Kenilworth castle again not as easy as told on joining information, your again not allowed to park in certain places unless your name is on the list or pay for parking in pub car park. information like this should be provided in full.. if more information is given for spectators could be the most fantastic day for all.. In short: Superb - my favourite 10k In full: Another wonderful 2 castles race - and somehow another PB on this course! My only gripe being the early start - being in Warwick Castle before 8AM was hard going! However, as per usual, everything at the castle was seamless - the route was superb, and the crowds were excellent! More of the same next year please, but put some chocolate in the goody bag!
