In short: A 'nearly 10k' with a difference! In full: Enjoyed the varied route provided by this race: through some residential streets, along the promenade (affording excellent views of the sea), a bit of sand, along the pier (or halfway at least!)and through a park.
A huge cheer went up when it was announced the route would have to be shortened though I know one girl I was running with was disappointed as she'd entered this race to try for a 10k PB (and it was a long way to come to be deprived of that opportunity) and I'm sure she wasn't alone in her disappointment. I understand the decision taken for health and safety reasons but it would have been nice if an extra bit could have been added somehow to make up the 10k. Maybe that would have been too problematic for the organisers, I don't know.
As always with the Great Runs a terrific atmosphere and a great mix of abilities. Goody bag was poor for the entry price, though I appreciate the money goes on other things such as administration/logistics needed to put a high profile event like this on. After doing a number of Great Runs in the last couple of years, I've come not to expect much from the goody bags now anyway! The medals are always great at least and t-shirts of good quality.
Was an additional treat to see Liz Yelling speeding past us in the opposite direction early in the race too! Date of review: June 17, 2008
In short: Great race for beginners In full: My first ever race.Got there early to watch the junior race,so no parking problems. Was disappointed that course was shortened without exact new distance being given. Excellent marshalling, good entertainment and support around the course -meant I didn't need to turn on my usual i-pod to keep me going. Next year will try to start nearer front as I couldn't run at my own pace til hit 2km mark due to bottle neck at start. Date of review: June 16, 2008
In short: I'm still telling everyone it was 10km!! In full: First time doing this race and really enjoyed it. There was a nice mix of elites, moderates and fun runners that latter of all I would class myself in. Organisation seemed really good and although th length was shortened due to water on the pier, I'm not convinced it was shortened quite as much as we were told, hence my proudly telling friends I did a sub one hour 10km! One criticism I would give though, was the poor communication between the race organisers and the local transport people. I tried to get there by metro, but 'essential maintenance' meant having to hop on a bus that took way longer than expected and nerly missed the start of the race. Participants really should have been warned in advance as i don't think I was the only one who had this problem.
All in all though a great morning and the weather was sunny and cloudy at exactly the right times. Date of review: June 15, 2008
In short: Great race, but the shortened course was disappointing In full: I've loved this race both times I've done it, but it was very annoying today to find out that the length was reduced - so we'll never really know how far we ran, so whether we did well etc. I also thought the goody bag was terrible for the cost of the race - just apricots? - even worse than the Great Manchester Run. I'll still keep returning, though. Tough, but great for those of us at the front and those of us further back, too. Date of review: June 15, 2008
In short: excellent organisation, great course - shame about the pier In full: second year of doing this race! absolute brilliant organisation, and goody bag ok at the end, could have done with a banana or something. unfortunatley due to waves on the pier, the run along there was cut short making the run apporx 5.6 miles rather than th 6.2, but still very good! a big PB, word of warning for furture runners - first lap round the first park can get quite bottlenecked, faster runners need to get themselves nearer the start line! however - no problems with parking etc, i did get there an hour before the start to watch the junior run would def do it again.
