In short: Scenic course, congested start & finish In full: My first 10k since 1992, and probably the largest entry field I have run in (2500). Chip timing promised for 2008 - it took me over a minute to cross the start line (from 60 minute board). Marshalling was clear - big turnout of onlookers means plenty of encouragement. Yes it does seem to be up-hill more than down, but the sight of all the runners streaming out of Warwick was impressive. In future I think they need to reorganise the finish to remove the queueing for medals - why not just give them out straight after the finish? Date of review: June 17, 2007
In short: could have run back quicker In full: Took forever to get going over the start line and then ground to a halt again to squeeze through the gates. The crowd support was fantastic pretty much all the way - especially at the end when you needed it. The finish line let the whole thing down unfortunately. 1) it took ages to get past the timekeepers and its not fun coming to a sudden stop and queuing - did start to feel a little fuzzy 2) Didn't appreciate the old marshalling bloke yelling 'keep moving' right down my ear - I WAS TRYING TO!! 3) Had to ask where the medals/t shirts were - the queue was horrendous but I saw a medal lady doing nothing and got in there quick 4)Asked a marshall where to get the bus, sent me to the wrong place on other side of castle for 1/2 hr wait. Eventually another marshall come over and sent us to the front where 1 1/2hrs after finishing I got back to the car park in Warwick - cold, sweaty and fed up. Its a shame but I probably won't doing this again - its getting too big and the organisation isn't coping. Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: showcase race for the region In full: Great to start within sight of the Castle entrance and to run through Warwick past the Castle itself. Fantastic feeling knowing up to 2,000 runners were breathing down your neck! Great to have a solid police prescence on the race leading the runners and making sure cars were stopped. The route was lovely - past the watermill, through the villages of Hill and Leek Wootton and then through the estate to Abbey Fields to finish in the castle grounds. Being in the top 100 i had no problems with queueing for a T-shirt or a medal but then I don't run to get freebies. I'd rather have the organisers put on a brilliant point to point race with the aid of the local police force. A 'must' for anyone in the Warwickshire region but the course is "rolling" shall we say ;-) Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Worst oragnised race I have ever done. In full: The start (despite being the two castles run) is not within view of Warwick Castle. They could at least run past it?
The finish was terrible. Finishers were herded into lanes and waited, and waited, and waited to very young people (trying hard) took down our finish times. Adults were used to give out water. Surely giving stressful jobs like these to young children is irresponsible when so many more capable people are on hand.
There was a second queue to get your medal and t-shirt. Never have I seen such a strange syste. Why not just give people medals over the finish line? The line was about 250m long at one time. When I told the martial about this he had no idea of the problems despite them being in front of him.
The coach returning to Warwick was unsigned and few martials knew where it was or when it would arrive. On arrival the coach stood for a long time (long enough for me to fech my car and be on my merry way) before returining to Kenilworth. No wonder it took longer to return by coach than to run there.
The people who organised the race were very 'nice' Im sure but if the weather had been hot how would people have coped being delayed waiting about for 2 hours stood in the sun? They had a lucky escape on this overcast summers day. Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: 25th anniversary?... you wouldn't have known. In full: As this was the 3rd year of entering this race (Im sure theres ALOT more people who have done it more too) I thought the organisers could have made more of an effort in shouting about it being the 25th year is been going. EXACTLY the same medal as previous years, there was a T-shirt this year which I think was a first but no mention of the anniversary. Stratford Marathon had a great medal last year for their 25th.
Enough of my little rant, Im over it now. That aside - great race, good atmosphere, needed the people out on the street on the last hill up to the castle... cant stop when people are watching! Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Nice race, a bit different and well worth having a go at. In full: My first attempt at this, and I have to say I quite liked it. Its a nice idea, very different form the usual single loop and the finish is very scenic. A bit too up-hill to have huge PB potential, but well worth doing anyway. The presentations at the end were a tad shambolic, but it was still a great way to spend a Sunday morning. Thanks to the organisers and all the friendly marshalls and supporters along the course. In short: a great hillyish run, really enjoyed getting up for it. In full: only moan is about the timing system not working & having to que for a paper log finish - will never know exact time of run - CHIPS next year please Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Enjoyable race with challenging hills for beginner In full: Very good support most of the way round. Only minor niggle is that i found the last few K through the estate a bit maze like...would like to try it in reverse though...downhill anyone?!? :) Date of review: June 11, 2007
