In short: First Half Marathon and oddly I enjoyed it! In full: Weather definitely helped. Mixed terrain was hard. Very friendly. Water/sweetie stops excellent. Great medal. Great sense of achievement to complete. Date of review: February 17, 2016
In short: Great race In full: Something for everyone, half , marathon or ultra. Easy parking, excellent organisation and fantastic marshalls and water stops, last 2 miles were hard against the wind but it is along the coast, lovely bit of bling too! Date of review: December 24, 2015
In short: Head winds suck! In full: Must be the 4th time I have done this race. Plenty of people running but the course never felt congested. Past years have seen me wear woolly hats and rain jackets but it was too warm for that this year - did rain a little but wasn't cold - did get hit by 30 seconds of torrential rain - hitting so hard I thought it must be hailstones - luckily it didn't last long.
I quite like the out and back route - nice to see the returning super fit people barely breaking sweat.
Loved the medal (doubles as a bottle opener) - awesome idea.
see you next year Date of review: December 23, 2015
In short: Well organised, Well supported, Well done!! In full: An excellent end of year race. Brilliantly organised, festively friendly and fun for all runners. From the half, to the full, to the ultra, this race has it all. You are warned previous reviews and emails, that it is multi terrain, from tarmac to muddy paths with some shingle beach thrown in. Ultra's get the added bonus of some more beach and some sand dunes. Many thanks Rob your race was just what I wanted. Its in the racing calendar for next year already. Happy Christmas. In short: Lovely happy marshals made this worthwhile! In full: This was far more trail than I was expecting but once I realised I relaxed and concentrated on dodging the mud! It was a shame that the landmark sights of Portsmouth don't feature at all. The mile markers were way out by about half a mile from about mile 7 and the course was long - a few runners commented on this. Last 2 miles in strong headwind knocked me for six, but the highlight was the amazing marshals- the water stations were a delight, and despite the rain and wind, all the marshals were encouraging and positive to the very end. Two lovely youngsters had choreographed a routine to point runners over the bridge - cheery and uplifting. Thanks to everyone for their time and commitment! Date of review: December 22, 2015
In short: Flat, with some off road sections but with some dull road sections In full: Very good organisation with registration and bag drop all very well run. Course naturally flat as it skirts the coast, with some good views when waterside, but also some dull road stretches alongside the A road. Marshalls and feed stations very good and plenty of support on some strteches of the route. Worthwhile if you fancy a late year marathon. Date of review: December 22, 2015
In short: Muddy, windy and wet but well worth it In full: 1st time doing this, and will be back next year but will wear trail shoes as it got very gloopy at times. End on the seafront was a slog due to the wind but I guess the weather kept the number of wandering pedestrians down. The water stations were frequent enough & very well stocked with gels, isotonic drinks, mince pies, mulled wine..... Date of review: December 22, 2015
In short: Mixed terrain, slippery in places, flat. Many sea and harbour views. In full: I loved this race. Although there are sections where passing is impossible, "it's a marathon, not a sprint" so overtaking options come along soon enough. Sections of beach and muddy trails are interspersed with promenade and pavement which I found made it interesting. Despite the terrain several of my pals pb'd and I was only 5 mins off my maiden/pb time. Mince pies and mulled wine were available at water stations for those bimbling round and overall I thought the organisation was good. Date of review: December 21, 2015
In short: A nice atmosphere but tough going In full: I have never done anything off road before and i totally underestimated quite how much was off road (maybe half?) and how much harder mud is to run in. I would probably do it again but as a 'fun' marathon. I was 30 mins slower than at Brighton earlier this year. Oh and lots of people (me included) thought the course was long and the markers were in random places. Date of review: December 21, 2015
