In short: Flat course but uneven toe path and too muddy In full: I found the constant jumping onto the side of the toe path to avoid the deep puddles exhausting and running on the bumpy toepath really worked my ankles which I hadn't been expecting. Also very middy so impossible to do a proper sprint finish! Scenic route though and well organised. Good value. Pretty fast race. Date of review: February 24, 2015
In short: Bit chaotic, good fun, nice route In full: Have done a few events with Energized Sports now and they generally have the same format.
Slightly chaotic start/finish areas (but they start on time which is most important)
Quick, open air bag drops. Good if you are in a hurry. Not so much fun if it is raining though.
Lots of enthusiastic marshals. Good at cheering you on. Not always the best at dealing with traffic - although to be fair that can be a hard task when dealing with London drivers!
Plenty of stuff given to you at the end.
This race was no exception. Course was a mixture of pavements and towpaths. Roads weren't closed but wasn't too much of an issue as most pavements fairly wide. A few back streets but these were generally quiet. Thames towpath is the main draw of this race. As always it gives a great view although as a few have pointed out and I agree with it was a bit bumpy in places. Puddles were fun though!
All in all a pleasant race and not bad value at £24.
In short: More Trail Than Expected but PB In full: Clocked in a PB however the tow path along the river is very uneven and unforgiving on those like me that suffer with sore knees. Very enjoyable and lovely marshals that encouraged when I was close to not getting my PB Date of review: February 23, 2015
In full: It's a good race with quite a fast field, I did 2hrs10 and was pretty much at the back so clearly good for fast times if you need someone quick to pace you. Only small criticism is that the marshalling around Richmond Green wasn't great, when I came up from the River, both times I wasn't sure if I was looking for a gap in the traffic or if the marshall was going to stop the traffic, I think I ended up dashing over in a gap whilst the marshalls were cheering and clapping - I think marshalls are there for both encouragement (which they were excellent for!) but also to ensure everyone crosses the roads safely. Not knowing for certain if they were looking for cars, or if I was, has to potential to be dangerous. I grew up in Richmond so I know my way round the Green but if you've never run in Richmond before those junctions can be a bit confusing. Date of review: September 15, 2014
In short: A well organised event with a pleasant route In full: The route is nice, with much of the race on footpaths or the canal towpath, and some on a reasonably wide pavement. The course is really flat so there is good PB potential, although the towpath might be a bit slower if very wet, depending on your shoe choice.
The event was well organised, with everything that you'd need: toilets, bag drop, etc. It is worth noting that the bag drop is outside so if it was raining then those whose bags weren't waterproof might have had disappointingly wet spare kit at the end!
If I race the route again then I might wear shoes with slightly more robust soles as I could feel the lumpy and stony surface of the towpath through my skimpy Brooks T7s. Date of review: September 15, 2014
