In short: Nice mix of canal tow paths and trail In full: I really enjoyed this race, it wasn't as trail like or muddy as I had first hoped as the tow paths are mainly tarmac but it was a nice friendly race, with a good atmosphere, funky medal and friendly volunteers, immediate chip timing with a print out and YES I would do it again. There was parking on site, quite a lot of club runners, big queue for the toilets in the HQ for the last half hour but there were more toilets round the back in the rowing unit so it wasn't a problem. There were lots of runners and no waves, which made starting easy no waiting around, but the first 3 miles were quite busy and crowded in places, I even had to walk through the first gate, you could pass on the canal tow paths although they advise not to, by the 3rd mile things had spread out a bit and you keep going along the canal for around 6/7 miles, you then reach the hill, personally I didn't find it too challenging its quite long but its not particularly steep and the reward of the woodland at the top was worth it, the woods go up and down slightly and then into a muddy field and back round to the tow path for the last 3 miles or so. The woods were beautiful and really nice to run through (wish there was a bit more of the woods), bit congested in some places in the woodland but as I was doing this for fun, so I didn't mind. I think if you are after a PB you need to make sure you start at the front of the race. Water in cups as you ran round and the odd jelly baby. All in all a lovely nice race. In short: Fantastic In full: My favourite half marathon. No frills or goody bags. Just plain good racing on a great route in the beautiful countryside. My only gripe last year was the generic medal. This year they were bespoke and look really good. This is not a difficult route. There is one major big hill and that's it. And we were lucky to have some rain to make it a little muddy. Can't wait for next year. Date of review: November 14, 2015
In short: Brilliant race, most awesome scenery, great mix of path and trail with a couple of killer hills chucked in for good measure. This is a MUST do race again for 2015 Date of review: November 19, 2014
In short: Good mix of towpath, hills and mud - all against a scenic Autumn backdrop In full: Fitted this one in after missing a run in late Sept because of illness. Really glad I did. The scenery made it a treat and I even enjoyed running up that hill - tho' I could have been fitter. On my list to do again. Date of review: November 18, 2014
In short: A race of 2 halfs - very enjoyable! In full: After 5 enjoyable quaint miles running down the Grand Union canal taking in the views of the locks, canal boats and friendly passers by, I was thinking to myself what a pleasant time I was having and whats more I was on for a PB!
Then out of nowhere came a very steep hill then I was hurtled into a forest where banks, puddles, tree branches, ups and downs awaited me. A crazy middle section is then followed by a challenging gaunt through cow fields, over bridges, through kissing gates back to the Grand Union. The legs really beginning to hurt now so thankfully the last couple of miles are back along the canal, a nasty little gladiator style travellator at the end was a little unwelcoming as we turned the corner for the finishing straight.
What a fun race. Date of review: November 18, 2014
