In short: Humanity in motion In full: This was my first on-road half, so must admit I have nothing to compare it with, but I was very impressed by the whole experience. Huge credit to the marshals, plentiful, cheerily encouraging, well placed and skilfully managing the traffic, which was generally respectful of the race. I was also amazed to see so many people at the roadside, especially in the country and the villages, given the harsh windchill, cheering us on, high fiving and offering jbs. The community involvement near the start/finish is great: church (cakes, drinks, children's activities), school, theatre. I don't understand why people care about the medal, but if you look closely at this one from Brentwood Rotary, I like that it has the slogan 'Humanity in motion'. The RW pacer ahead of me was absolutely spot on. I live locally and I do think a few more road sections could be closed where there are alternative routes. Date of review: March 27, 2013
In short: I thought I was getting Bell's Palsy my face was so numb In full: Really thought it was going to be off due to safety concerns. Glad I completed it though just to say I've done it. There was less chat around the course than in previous years and I put this down to the wind and snow. The Essex countryside is normally enjoyable to run through but it looked like some Gulag on Sunday. Will be doing it again next year as it's a good course and the hill at the end is always good to see how fit you are. Date of review: March 27, 2013
In short: Friendly, well-organised and just tough enough! In full: The second time I tackled this race was the polar opposite to the first - with a heavy slant on 'polar'. Despite the freezing conditions, there were plenty of people at the start line. Great atmosphere too. The marshalls, despite clearly being colder than the runners, were fantastic as usual and the people of Essex as supportive as ever. Even running on the main road was OK - drivers were very considerate. No criticisms of this race - we can't change the weather!
See you next year, Brentwood! Date of review: March 26, 2013
In short: Well organised and good atmosphere.. In full: First time here and despite bitter weather thought this was a very well organised race with numerous and enthusiastic marshalls throughout. The course was a lot faster and flatter than I had imagined although traffic on some of the roads made progress a bit tricky. Could have done with a banana or Mars bar at the finish but overall a good event and would run it again.. H&P Date of review: March 25, 2013
In short: Very well organised race and great PB potential. In full: Excellent organisation. Kept up to date in advance on whether race was going ahead or not due to weather conditions. Have managed PB each of the three times I've done this race. Marshals did a great job, dealing with the queuing traffic in the places where runners and cars shared the road. Great local support and nice touches from local theatre (coffee, toilets) and church hall (cakes, burgers). Definitely one to return to again and again. Date of review: March 25, 2013
In short: Getting bigger each year In full: This is the second time I have done this race and there is definitely a non-clubby feel to it. This year there were Runners World pacemakers for the first time although I didn't see any. The race was very busy due to the numbers running and the hall was very congested. There were plenty of loos (always a good thing!!!) The organisers need to make sure that everyone is in their right "zone" at the beginning, it was a bit haphazard and faster runners got caught up behind slower runners. It was unclear nearer the start as to where the zones were although signs were posted further down, closer to the finish!! That said, the course had sufficient marshalls and was well signed. The course was relatively flat, you could get a nice pace going, although there was a bit of a bottleneck going onto pavements. A very very cold race day but I enjoyed the race and got a nice pb!! In short: Cold day, but fast course. Thank you marshalls. In full: For the price of entry to this race, water in cups really ought to be a thing of the past. Good, fast course, scenic. Date of review: March 25, 2013
