In short: Nice day out with a very good crowd In full: I did this in a Spidey morphsuit so I was grateful the weather wasn't too hot, as for scenery I couldn't really see much but I know Manchester pretty well anyway. The crowd and atmosphere was great and I think I made a few people smile which is always a bonus.
The staff there were pretty much spot on and I have no complaints at all.
The finish was really cool, coming into the stadium I got quite a cheer and had enough left to sprint full pelt to the line.
I do wish there were more photographers on duty but that's a minor grape.
in all, I'd say it's a definite 2015 date for me. Date of review: July 18, 2014
In short: Great organisation and good route In full: I was looking for a race as a follow up to a half marathon from the weekend before, and as i live five mins from the City ground this one was perfect. The event was slickly organised and a great venue for the start, once it left sports city it got a bit boring. It was very disheartening seeing the elite man leading the race coming back onto the main road as we hit 3k and he was at 4.5 at about 13 mins. Good route though and great to see so many different people taking part. Nice little goody bag with a medal & T'shirt. Would certainly do this again and recommend as a race worth doing. In short: Fair play to the organisers for tackling last years issues! In full: Ok so after saying last year I would never run this event again the date fell nicely with my plans this year and I decided to give it one more go and entered on the early bird at £16.
Firstly the organisation, it certainly flowed a bit better pre-race than last time. The sports hall was easy to get through and there were more doors you could use rather than just the single door like last year. Toilets were a little better signposted although everyone still tried to use the ones in the sports center. The start of the race was much better only having a 200m stretch of track before heading out of the stadium. The route is fairly dull but its also pretty fast, there is a 1k climb between 2 and 3k but once you have that out of the way the rest feels more or less downhill which is great and leads to good times. The water stop at 5k was a little understaffed, only 2 people on each side of the road. It was just about ok for the group of us around 44 mins but i can imagine for the peak times it may have led to a bottleneck. There were also no catch bins so all the bottles were just scattered all over the road.
After the race the medal/goody bag picking was much much smoother than last year and caused no backup whatsoever. So well done to the organisers for that. The goody bag is still a waste of time though, purely promo stuff and no food etc which would be nice. Water was plentiful though which was good to see.
The main point though in this 10k event is that this year the course measured 10k unlike last year!
All in all the organisers did well to turn around last years issues. The race is never going to be a must do for many people, its pretty dull and that cant really be changed due to location but its pretty fast which is good for those PB hunters. I'll probably be back but i wouldn't base my race calender round it.
In short: Great race In full: Great atmosphere makes up for a not particularly scenic route with a lot of sharp corners and kerbs. Fast course despite these though, and great start and finish on the track with lots of support. Date of review: July 14, 2014
In short: well organised great atmosphere In full: I really enjoyed this run and the set up was fantastic. Loved the guy on the tannoy -kept us entertained .warm up was fun also. Nice to finish on the track .
In short: Badly organised, inaccurately measured, poor! In full: The icing on the cake was certainly the 25 minute wait for the "goody bag" at the end which was rubbish! I finished in 53 mins, those who were slower had ALOT longer wait! No atmosphere. Was later advised that it was actually more than 10km because a marshall was stood in the wrong place. In short: Poor organisation and inaccurate route In full: Hard to come up with much that is positive about this poorly organised race. The extra lap around the track at the start wasn't adequately compensated by other route changes, so the race was at least 150m longer than 10k. There was rudeness from some (not all) of the marshals and stadium staff; the goody bag was a joke and queues to collect them were ridiculous, inadequate toilets and permitting a photographer to remain on the track after the start was downright dangerous. By comparison, almost any parkrun - completely organised by amateur volunteers - ia a model of professionalism by comparison. At least the parking was plentiful and free, though cars should have been permitted to leave at least 10-15 minutes earlier by which time there were hardly any runners left at that point on the course. Oh, and it was sunny, but you can't give the organisers credit for that. Date of review: July 24, 2013
In short: "we love to make a profit" race. Appaling organisation In full: Waited over 45 mins outside in queue to collect bag. If the weather had been bad this would have been a night mare. A sachet of sugar as a gift! WTF. The "hight quality rucksacks" have snapped at the zip already after one use. Many People didn't do the full 2 track laps as it was not explained. Signage was rubbish, attitude of those on the doors was incredibly poor, treating people like children Date of review: July 18, 2013
In short: This race has gone pear shaped since last year In full: In 2012 this race was a lot better organised. The two main differences last year were a) you could collect your goody bag before the race, thus easing congestion at the end and b) runners were allowed to move more freely in and out of the sportshall, with none of the "you can't come in this entrance it's exit only" attitude. Last year we aslo didn't run one and a half laps of the track before the race, only about 350 metres and the same at the end. This race really needed wave starts as a 400m track cannot accommodate 2000 runners. Thankfully I got the early bird £8 entry but I can imagine if you paid full price you'd be pretty hacked of at being ripped off in such a brazen way Date of review: July 18, 2013
