sounds like percect idea Mark, rome wsnt built in a day you know, you'll be surpised how quickly you imporve, book yourself into a local 5k race and use that as your motivation

do you have proper running shoes?

lol, ok as long your feet feel comfy, wouldnt be bad idea to get to a proper running shop and get your feet analysed tho, if your wearing wrong shoes it can lead to injury, i ran in worng shoes for over a yr, and wondered why kept getting knee problems!

I thought army fitness level was more like 12 mins for 1.5M?
10 mins seems a bit harsh.

Anyway, a 5k training prog would probably be an ideal way to go about it.
Once you've got started on it, and can run for at least 30 mins 3 times a week, you could pay particular attention to shorter intervals (running half-mile and/or quarter-mile repetitions at a quicker than average pace).
Good Luck!
