Had this one last year is it rock solid so that you can't bend your leg?

I saw a physio and on the first session it was like someone unlocking a door with a magic key. He turned the muscle to jelly. I saw him once more the following week and was able to run a 20mile race in the third.

If your in South London try

RWBB,

sounds inflamed. suggest ice, rest, & take ibuprofen to reduce the swelling for a week. don't run if still store - I'm resting mine for four weeks after something similar.

I have been in gym - on cross trainers, biking and swimming though. Go to the injury forum and have a look - there's a few threads there that might help too.

Interesting the RICE theory.
I did completely the opposite. After treatment each night I put a hot water bottle on it.

Ice reduces the inflamation and swelling. Heat however increases the blood flow to an area and thus repairs it quicker.

Im not a medical person but heat worked for me.

You need a massage to get rid of all the scar tissue (beady feeling). Will also help with tightness. If five days have gone by it shouldn't be sore, are you sure you are not prodding it!!!
Look up the website for london school of sports massage, it will list a therapsit near you.

RWBB,
Without looking at something its hard to tell what it could be but if you have just started running or have just increased the level of training it could be that the muscle in the calf has expanded faster than the sheath that surrounds it. IF this it the case then rest is really the only cure. However I agree with Elise that massage wil probably help. That does not mean that you can't exercise and swimming should be fine and any non weight bearing exercise in the gym should be okay as well.
