Hello June-Liz , today can be the most important day of your life,good luck.

You are right in that you need support,stopping drinking can be easy,staying stopped is usually the hard bit. I am an AA member, so i wont try and change your thinking,just wondering have you tried AA and not liked it or have you heard negative things about it ?.  AA gave me life back and now running is one of the bonuses a sober life has given me,among many others.

Keep posting,there are many others i am sure who will help you in your chosen path,all the best

Thanks for replying.  I can now admit I have a problem I drink to get drunk, over Christmas and New Year was really bad drinking near 2 bottles of wine a night, tried stopping but after 2/3 days got the urge again. Have looked at all sites and was close to going to local AA meeting on Friday after getting drunk again on Thursday but i suppose apart from shame and embarrassment if I knew someone there, I also will try on my own. If I get the urge I will go to docs and ask for some pills. My OH has got to look at this as well cos he's the one who gets it for me. I love running and have done London marathon in1989, 3 GNR's and many half and 10ks few years back. it feels good to be able to admit this and hopefully my love of keeping fit will crush this demon. If I fail again I will have no choice but to go to a meeting. I do no someone who goes and they have been dry for over 5 years and enjoy life to the full so I won't rule it out. thanks again

Hi June-Liz welcome on board. I'm very much like you (I think) I buy wine for the weekend and will drink best part of a bottle every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It used to be worse when my husband worked nights and I was left on my own - I used to drink every night then. He's had another job for the past 4 years and I'm still stuck in this rut. Some weekends are better than others. I'm also trying to get back to my target weight and am resenting the empty calories that booze represents. It also causes me to make mucus so breathing is difficult when running. I hope you get to enjoy your running again - have you got a race to focus on training for? I've got the BUPA 10k in May so am trying to start building up runs towards that.

Hope everyone is ok. Been out for a run today of just over 3.5 miles. I managed first in my age category at parkrun yesterday for the second week in a row - I know the lady who regularly comes first and she must be on holiday because she's not been around for a while!

Hi Trigger

I too have put on weight about 2 stone which would be lovely to lose before July when I go on a family holiday to Majorca. I have booked to take part in Isle of Man walking festival in May so I will need to be fit for that and after that in June a boot camp for a week. So i'm very optimistic for the future. 

Just love how honest everyone on this site is about their own alcohol demons sometimes you think fit people just don't drink!

I did a parkrun last year, really loved it but always seemed to have a drink on Fridays which spoilt it for Saturday morning and then I wouldn't go. Will try very hard to be there on Saturday.

Writing a lot today probably cos i'm new and its just great to get it off my chest.

Hi Everyone, and a warm welcome to you June-Liz,

I hope you are all okay, the sun is showing its face here in Yorkshire !!

I am afraid it's confession time for me, as after 5 weeks off the booze, I ,after long deliberation decided to have a drink when some friends came around last Saturday.

I can say though that, as soon as Sunday came I was more determined to get back off it again, and that is what I have done.

I certainly know one thing, when I look back over the 5 weeks sober, compared to one day with drink, I know which I prefer now, and that is sober & booze free !!

So I start again back to 3 days off the booze, and looking forward to many more !!

Well done YP - 5 weeks off the booze is a great achievement and I day's lapse is nothing!

Cloudy here in Norffffffffffff London but I don't mind that as I'm at work! Running home tonight - 2.5 miles and am quite looking forward to it

Hi YP 5 weeks, brilliant.  

Another night TT it's getting hard tho especially as the weekend is nearly here, any suggestions.

Park run is keeping me motivated but footy on tomorrow night and usually associate it with a getting a few drinks in.  I could always get a wine glass and fill it with soda water and pretend !!

I must admit that I'm out for a meal tonight so there'll be a glass or 2 of wine - very unusual for me to go out during the week but it's my husband's aunt's 84th birthday and his nephew's 25th. Still won't drink on Friday night - I just normally stick to diet coke or one of the other sugar free fizzies - you'll be fine J-L.

Miserable morning out there and the run home doesn't look as though it'll be any drier. Seriously in danger of developing webbed feet!

Good morning

Not too bad here in North West off to Ellesmere today for a long walk round the Mere and up the hills. Went on Tuesday to rekki it for walking club got lost and did about 10 miles so going back today hopefully  get it right  it was so muddy so probably be worse today due to overnight rain, gaitors ready.   Have a nice time Trigger.

Here we are then - Friday and after the week from hell when I'd really love a glass of wine I've made a pledge not to drink. Ironic then that I've managed to hurt my back and may not be running tomorrow after all - Still not going to give in to it though- may have a hot bath and early night to see if I can sort it out.

Well done in being first lady back on PR trigger.

It's been a difficult February that was my last run, I managed to do a 5k this morning though, a jog walk in 53.46 mins, hopefully though with it being only a month, my times will increase back to old time quickly.

Booze wise, I'm stuck on the beer twice a week.

YP1 keep trying to reach your goal.

June-Liz, I'm sure you will reach your target.

Hello Sinbad,we have not left you.

Hope you are well and sober and still running,if your running your physical and mental state will be much better and allow you more effort to quit the booze. Thats what the thread is all about - keep going.

Out for a run this morning along the coast,pretty fast for my standard, 6.3 miles in 1 hour 2 minutes,quite pleased with that,will see how the old bones are later on though !!

Hello,hope everyone is keeping fit and healthy, not heard from any of the girls who had a "not drinking on fridays" planned,how did it go ?

Have just come back from sharing a volountary talk at the Edinburgh "drying out" clinic and feel so grateful to be free from that murderous obsession to drink and live a normal life. I can of course relate to those currently in that clinic as i was once there myself !!  To think i once thought i was just a lad who liked a pint and to socialise,how wrong i was.

Had a nice run of 7.1 miles early this morning in 1 hour 10 minutes, have entered my first race, a half-marathon in September so hopefully stay fit till then.
