New runner: advice please

I've been wanting to start running for a long time, and now I've finally decided to take the plunge. My problem is that I have absolutely no idea where to start.

I've been looking at guides to buying running shoes, but none of them seem to address my particular leg problems. I was born with my achilles tendons too short. It's a genetic thing, I got it from my dad. I had physiotherapy for a few years, as well as wearing these awful plastic splints on my legs day and night; but in the end the hospital told me that there wasn't much they could do for me without surgery.

(I can't have surgery because I'm allergic to anaethesia. Ain't life grand?)

The gist of it is that walking on my flat feet physically hurts. I normally force myself to do it, but when it comes to inclines and hills - I can't. I usually remedy this by wearing heels or wedges, but I can't exactly run in them.

Does anyone know what kind of shoes would be best for me? Or could point me in the direction of someone who does.

Thanks

Interesting question, but one that I think you need to consult a podiatrist about, and one who specialises in runners. You might get advice from a specialist running shop, but it sounds like the sort of thing they might not be qualified to answer properly. You can get orthotics to wear in your running shoes which can address various issues, which might help, and a podiatrist would be able to provide those. Hope you get it sorted out.

Listen to the rodent.

Get it sorted properly first by a specialist. A lot of us run with inserts. The running shops are very good but if they were excellent they'd be running clinics and earning a damn sight more money
