Nothing to half marathon in 8 weeks - possible?

My husband wants to do a half marathon on 15th September but he has never run before and isn't particularly fit. I used to run and have done halfs in the past so I know it's hard. I've said that I don't think it's sensible for him to do it and that he should train for a 10K first.

He tells me there are training plans for it so it must be possible. What do you think, is he asking for trouble.

I would think it would be possible depending on commitment. If he's out just to finish the run then he could run/walk his way round and still get that sense of achievement, however, I'm more inclined to agree with you and would suggest a smaller run first.

If the entry fee can be paid nearer to the race day could he not do his training and see how he feels nearer the time? He could well change his mind

If he was fit from another sport then I'd say go for it. But if he's not particularly fit, while it is undoubtedly doable it seems a ridiculous idea to me. An 8 week training plan for total novices is a not something I've ever seen.

Encourage him to do it then take the piss for the next 6 months (or years) when he has to walk from half way.

Let him do it. He will most likely finish but should be prepared having to walk some (a lot) of the race.
I find with ppl who don't want to listen to good advise to let them get on with it, and let them find out on their own

If he wants an uncomfortable couple of hours then yes, that's if he makes it to the start line without injury. When you first start your running you tend to pick up niggles here and there.

The problem sometimes is people see training plans, see week 1 has runs of a certain distance and think that means complete beginners who have never run before can expect to complete those distances. It sadly ain't that simple. A fit person may have a chance, but an unfit person who doesn't run is likely to struggle to complete even week 1. And if they do somehow make it, they'll probably pick up an injury in week 2 or 3. I found this out the hard way.
