Hello everyone my first time so be gentle
been running about a year and doing cardiff
marathon next month how long to run/walk.
Or is that the same as piece of string.!!

what have you been doing in training so far
best not to change thigs at this stage

there are various permutations
Run a mile, wlk a minute
Run 5-10 minutes, walk one
etc
or, run till you cant trun anymore and then walk with the occasional running bit
Given the cut off in cardiff-that stupid last plan is the one i will be folllowing

how much have you done in training and how long has it taken you?

oh and welcome to the madhouse!

You guessed it :-) It's entirely up to you how long you run and how long you walk. The best results are achieved by following your chosen strategy for the whole race, so do the walking bits even if you're feeling good early on in the race.

I know someone did the Kent 50 mile challenge last year with a "run to the mile marker, walk for 2 minutes, run to the next mile marker" strategy, which seemed to work quite well.

Hi hippo and the rest been running 4 times a week for past 3 months trying to follow plan a mix of speed 10k about 50 mins
work 3 - 4 miles longest run 12 miles up to
now planning 14 this weekend but may have to walk a bit.

ok
so, can you run that 12 without walking?

doesnt matter if you cant

Id say you are pretty short on long runs, and if youve only been running for 3 months, its a big ask to expect a marathon of your body

Im not saying dont do it(cough, i did the same in 2002, but had not even done 12 miles)

why dont you test the walk run thing when you do the 14 this weekend
the thing about the long ones is to slow the pace down so you can cover the distance
more important to have spent 2-3 hours on your feet

how long did it take you to do 12 miles

Ran 12 without walk it took just short of 2 hours planed more long runs but mickey mouse got in the way two weeks in florida that is. hope to run 10 or 12 in mara then run walk maybe, or should i be walking sooner.

run/walk from the beginning and you will get further and feel less tired
19/09/2006 at 14:33
okay
then you will be fine for the cutoff

(13.1 miles in 2.5 hours)

Because of this cutoff, o wouldnt start walk run till half way
that isnt the way i would normally advise to do run walk-the idea as has been said is to walk early on, and not just when you cant run any more-therefore conserving energy and being able to keep going for longer
you are going to possibly have a really bad time anywhere between 16-22 miles
if you havent gone really long befoe-you wont know what happens
so prepare to feel bad at some point, and want to give up, i mean REALLY give up
but, you get through it, and you finish-will be one amazing feeling

I think you have time for one 16 miler next week-and if you can do that, then its single figures to go afterwards
good luck
