Pavey, there might be people in your local club who go out at 5.30 and want someone to run with.

Wilkie, I'd dare to say your club is typical of many. Mine is also a social club as much as anything.

Most of my runs are as my commute... but even if a running club met outside my house and finished at my work, I don't think I'd join.

Running is my chance to indulge my anti-social side.   When else do you have the luxury of a few hours completely inside your own head?  I don't want to chat when I run, and I don't want to see other runners blocking the view...

Sorry!

I admit it would be good for speed sessions though.

Also Brian, to be honest, I don't do enough races to make it financially worthwhile.  I enjoy running alone for the peace and quiet, I always find that running with other people irritates me!!

I don't know if this applies to all clubs, but at least with the one i'm in members get a 10% discount at Up and Running shops.

Me too Pavey.

I enjoy the solitude of running.

The social aspect would get on my t*ts to be honest.

Mr Darcy

most clubs get 10% off at their local running shop.

Another good incentive to be a club runner

I joined because I hadn't run in 20+ years and knew I needed help. And I wouldn't be without now - training in a group just makes me train that bit harder than I would on my own because there's always someone a bit faster to try and keep up with.

There is more to most clubs than discounts at races, and training.

Most clubs also take part in league races against other clubs in the area, and some run a regular handicap race. These events are not normal open to non-members.

So far this year I have ran 7 races and not had to pay for any of them. If I wanted to with my club there are over 30 races I could enter through the club and not have to pay for any of them.

I had not consider this when I joined as I only joined because:-

1. My kids where members.
2. I wanted to do the odd training session in a group.
3. I wanted to save the £3 a time I was paying for the monthly 5Km handicap.

1. Coaching from a qualified coach

2. Group track sessions

3. Access to league competition

4. Transport to races

5. Friendly rivalry to spur me on

6. Competing to score for team
