Winter Running

As summer turns to winter.......

I've been running for a few months now and I'm really enjoying it. I tend to do most of my runs first thing in the morning and now that the weather is getting a little colder I am noticing a sharp drop in my motivation (and inclination) to get out of bed.

I'm really worried that I'll use the winter months as am excuse to cut back on my running - does anyone else feel this way and do you have any super tips to get me up at stupid o'clock on a miserable December morning?

Yes. Once you are out in it, it's actually quite fun. I love running in the cold and the rain - it makes you feel alive. And the hot shower at the end feels great. I also find that I can run further and faster in colder weather, as I don't get so hot. (Admittedly it's not the same for everyone).

And if it's a crisp cold sunny morning, there is definitely nothing better.

Hi karlq ,I agree lozf once you are out there its great. If you have access to a gym switching to some treadmill running is what i did when it was particularly icy and cold!-except i feel a bit like a hamster in its wheel on a treadmill!

There's loads of running events over the winter. Enter one or two to give yourself the incentive to keep going.

Lay out your running kit ready for the morning and have an early night (get some winter running gear for when it's cold). Plan for a slap up breakfast when you get back (of course, if you bottle out of the run, you're not allowed the nice breakie).

When the alarm goes off, get up straight away and get the kit on. Don't give yourself time to think about staying in bed.

It's not a feasible option for many, but what about getting a dog? My labrador hears me the moment I'm up and won't let me be until I take him out.

Lozf - cold & crisp, yes, but there ain't much sun at 4:30am in December!

Don't forget Autumn either

Running somewhere on a misty October or November morning, with the trees in glorious colour all around you...Fantastic.

The transition to winter running happens far more gradually than you think( or maybe I'm just slow on the uptake, so it takes me ages to realise the summer has gone!)

Running on frosty mornings is fantasic too!

All this talk of winter...just wondered if anyone runs on Christmas day? I never have done before but imagine a nice run before indulging for the rest of the day could be good fun!

Always run on Xmas Day - it's great. Sets you up for the day, and everyone is so friendly and smiley.

Won't be this year though....as I'm likely to have just given birth!

Solved problem by getting a dog. I have to get up and walk him anyway, so I may as well run!

On doing a bit more searching on the web I've come to the conclusion that it could be a lot worse.....
