Am I alone in NOT considering the 100m as the blue riband athletic event?

I am peeved at the overhype of these races, the false starts and the posturing - all this for an event that is over
in the blink of an eyelid (if you're dropping off like I am).

The REAL events at athletic meets are the 400m - 10km races on the tracks, and the marathon.

Grrr....

I've not got a favorite event, but think most track & field can be ace - even the 100m! World X-Country champs & London Marathon are probably my outright faves though (especially while we've got Paula to support) .

Tim I agree with you, there is nothing like watching a good distance race. A marathon can be fantastic to watch just take this years London for example.
I was out in Portugal a couple of years ago & managed to watch the World XC Championships totally amazing to see the top athletes race each other.

When I watch these exciting races, I always feel inspired to get out running asap afterwards. Not always advisable if I have been supping some of the amber (or slightly browner) nectar during the viewing:-)

Also agree that a good Marathon is excellent viewing.

Yup.
Anything less than 10k is surely some sort of warm up? ( other than 400m cos that really is hard)

Well, 5k is also OK,. Agree that 400m is a hard event, although the last 385 m of Marathon can be hard (but exhilarating) as well...

I like to watch races that last a bit longer then a few mins, I like to watch 10k upwards, Triathlons and adventure races like the ECO challenge – they give you a chance to get absorbed in the race and have one or tow jars during the viewing experience ;o)
