Wondering if any one can help me gain some work experince or a chance to shadow a midwife before I apply for my course- I am fully CRB checked for my current job!

I would love the chance to spend a hour or two firsthand with a midwife!

PLease message me if you can help!

You got a job lined up ?

The 3 midwives who trained with my Sprog still haven't found midwifery 2 years after they graduated

OK

Perhaps worth looking into it, especially with the proposed PCT changes to GP's holding the funds....

Just know my Sprogs mates are all doing non midwifery jobs to pay the bills

I'd suggest a note to your local GP surgeries. They'll have community midwives associated with them who may be happy to let you shadow for while? You may get a chance to attend a home birth.

Or perhaps you could try a birthing centre which are midwife led. Might be easier than getting access to a hospital ward.

I may be making this up but I'm sure a friend had to have her new staff re-CRB checked even for a move between depts in the NHS. That could be a hurdle!

Thanks for you help guys- will definitely drop a line to the local GP!!

Have a few friends who have just finished so will see how they get on finding jobs!!

ok, so you know what you're getting yourself into? My SiL is just finishing her training, albeit with 3 children and a husband working long and irregular hours as a pilot, and I think she's found it a challenge.

VikW, I am a community midwife, feel free to ask me Q's by PM.  Certainly at my unit there is no way you can shadow a midwife, even though you are CRB checked.  I know it sounds silly but even, for example, though you may be CRB checked to be a health visitor, you would need another disclosure if you started midwifery training, then another for a midwifery job.  Getting a placement within a birthing centre/community midwifery would be no easier, as it still needs a CRB, as there are still babies there   It's mental isn't it?  Years gone by there was the ability to get placements but now it's much more stringent on the CRB stuff. As I say though, feel free to PM me.

DteS, there are *heaps* of midwifery jobs where I am but perhaps they don't want to live in Londinium...we are crying out for mw's here.
