Cougie, I'm not a plumber, however have done quite a bit of plumbing in my 180 year old house so to answer your questions
1. Yes, you can buy special tools for a few quid. Can't remember what they're called but if you pop into B & Q and go to the plumbing part you'll probably see the tools that have big enough jaws to grip.
2. Sounds like an air block. If you get a bit of hosepipe and connect the cold water tap to the hot water tap and turn them both on the cold water goes into the hot water pipe and removes the air block. Can be a bit messy so get lots of towels out! There are another few reasons but this is the one I've had most often.
