done! I got bitten by a dog yesterday at work!  Just to make a point to all that reads this forum, I love dogs but it is not funny to train your dog to hate posties, nor is it funny to see the dog snatch the mail from the letter box as the postie pushes it through. Get a box on the wall or  a dog basket of the letter box........Please

I got bitten by a letter box when I was a postie.

I think this legislation is a step in the right direction though.

Here here cake. Nice link.

I used to love dogs but was attacked (whilst at work) by a staffy bull terrier in august last year. I am now petrified of dogs off a lead, and several times recently whilst out running I've had dogs run at me and frankly ive screamed like a big girls blouse. The last time, just days ago I was running through a local country park when a boxer, off the lead, ran at me (owner 50yds away totally oblivious) and I was that fearful I fell into a ditch.

I wont be signing it. I think enforced identification is a different question - nothing to do with dangerous dogs. Both mine are chipped but if one decided to bite you how does the fact it's got a chip in it help you or the police ?

Personally I'm against the govt (or RSPCA) getting involved in some kind of dog licence or identification scheme - for two dogs just to cover costs the expense is not going to be insignificant and a lot of people just aren't going to bother anyway.

Apart from that call for compulsory identification - which I think is wrongheaded - the wording is so vague and broad ranging that it's virtually meaningless.

Of course when we used to have dog licences nobody ever got bitten.

What has actually changed in the last few years? Are there really more dogs running wild and savaging people, or is it just more newsworthy? Would a child losing part of an ear have been front page news and lead news item on TV 30 or 40 years ago? My guess is it would barely have merited more than a couple of lines in a local paper. Yes, there are criminal elements using dogs as weapons, but that's as old as the hills, and bringing in new rules about chipping dogs is hardly likely to make much difference there as the law is hardly a deterrant to the people concerned.

In my view this issue (if indeed it is one) is just yet another symptom of the increasing selfishness that is growing in society, and of the increasing anti-social and intolerant nature of people rather than anything else. The problem is that rather than trying to fix the underlying issue people instead chose the easy (and dare I say selfish and intolerant) path of threatening people with the law instead.

dangerous dogs should be muzzled when been taken out for a walk by the owners

How would chipping/ dog licences be enforced? Would every police person have a doggy chip reader? Would the council have to employ 10s of dog wardens to patrol every bit of green space in their district?

Even if reputable breeders chipped their puppies when they leave their mother, non registered/ accidental/ puppy farms aren't going to do this. People who are training their dog to be agressive wont fill out the forms for a dog licence.

I agree with BOTF it's society becoming more selfish.

dog bite is o.k, he just got a little taste, I have had worse. I normally call the police out as I have zero tolerance to badly behaved dogs and thier owners. This owner is a farmer and for the past couple of days  kept apologising to me and the dog has been suitably punished ( I darn't ask!)

I'm not for any new legislation - who is going to enforce it? In many ways there are big improvements today over 30-40 years ago - then there was dog poo all over the pavements and seeing dogs roaming the streets was normal. You don't really see that now. I do agree though that there still are problems - people don't control their dogs adequately and breeding is out of control. As others have said, the fault is with selfish people, not the dogs who suffer terribly. Abandoned dogs are PTS in large numbers daily in this country - man's best friend in a supposedly animal loving country - it's a national disgrace. Especially the poor unfairly maligned Staffies - a breed that in the past was known affectionately as the nanny dog as they were so good with children. Dogs are seen as accessories by many leading to the issues that people are rightly upset over. I have been chased many times and bitten once which has made me wary around loose dogs but generally they are not a problem.

Running P just make sure you've reported any dog bites kid remember if you have to take any time off for them it's a industial injury if it's not reported it's time off sick.

If a dog bites you, and it's apparently not the dogs fault (lol) but rather the owners, then chip all dogs, then when some ones bitten find out who owns it, and put the owner down.

I think we could solve a few of the countries issues if we followed this.... most irresponsible dog owners i've met are definitely lacking in the common sense department.
