Can any one recommend their vintage ales, and if so, which is the best year (in their opinion)?

Ales have vintages?? News to me!  Er... ESB, 2011.

And since they took over the Horndean brewery, Gales HSB which tastes a bit heavier than ESB even though alcohol content is a bit less, but I prefer the fruitier taste of ESB usually.

Cheers Phil

+1 ESB

Fuller's are advertising Vintage ales 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 ranging from £5 - £7 a bottle.

It's my birthday soon, so was contemplating buying some.

Oh cool.  Sounds like a very good excuse for a "vertical tasting" to me, especially as it's my birthday in three weeks!

my birthday on the 14th.

According to their website, vintage ales are available at Waitrose, but unfortunately not my local. 'will have to order online.

Have a happy tasting

Cheers, and you!  My regular grocery stop is a massive Waitrose, so should be in with luck there.

Thanks for the tip off - my birthday was ages ago but I do have a few pounds of birthday money left to spend. So Waitrose on Saturday it is!

I wonder if they do vintage crisps to match?

I did get one of the earlier vintages for Christmas a few years back - I was planning on saving it for a few years but ended up drinking it within the year (possibly after a marathon).

Unfortunately I can't remember what it tasted like at all!

A good reminder that I need to get exploring some more ales. I developed my tasting ability at my last job (being on the tasting panel for both ales and lagers was a nice way to spend an hour each month), but now I don't feel any particular loyalty to just one brewer!

I had a pint of Piddle the other night...4.1% but quite hoppy... with a dry after taste. Worth a try if you like hoppy beer.

A friend bought me a presentation box of four Piddle Brewery beers plus a rather nice straight pint glass.

The four beers are:

Slasher in the night.

Thunder Box Porter.

Jimmy Riddle.

Hmmm,

I wonder what is happening to the ale while it matures?  Spirits can carry on absorbing stuff from the barrel, wines have tannins which mellow, but beer?  May have to find a Waitrose to enable some testing.

No vintage at my Waitrose, so settled for the Golden Pride, excellent, but only managed 3 at 8.3%
