Geocaching anyone?

My husband and kids are really into geocaching and I've started going out with them too. For anyone who doesn't know about it it's like a huge treasure hunt around Britain using GPS coordinates to hide caches. These caches sometimes have swap stuff like badges, small toys, stickers etc and you sign a log to confirm you've found it. There are loads in the parks near where we live and the kids (and dog!) happily walk about 5 miles at a time to find a few. Hoping to be out early tomorrow round Rosshall Park in Glasgow as there are new ones there. Is there anyone else who geocaches?

I love the idea of it but couldn't find the time to do it regularly

I like the idea - but how do you know where to find the caches?

There is a website where people post the coordinates and sometimes a clue as they can be hard to find. The best we have found had a small hole cut out of a log and carefully replaced with the cache inside. I am a bit technophobe but my husband downloads the coordinates onto his garmin for the area we want to visit and then off we go!

I was about to say that. Which reminds me that I want to get one sorted.

Aah, I didn't know about letter boxing but it sounds good too. I'll get outdoor pursuits enthusiast hubby on to this.

oh, that looks like fun too, will have to see if there are any round my area - would make a walk more interesting for the kids

Coincidence, was planning a day out with my daughter doing this today.

My son and I have done geocaching in the Cotswolds and also around where we live.

Download coordinates to my Garmin and then off we go. Its lovely getting out and about and seeing areas that we'd not normally have been to. We've had a couple of challenging caches to find. All the rest have been fairly easy.

Haven't tried letter boxing though.

That was fun, bit frustrating not being able to find some of the caches though. Went to 5 locations & found two.

Hi, we went out geocaching this morning and for the first time ever met fellow geocachers looking in the same place as us. Out of 4 that we looked for we got 3, but I agree it is so frustrating when you can't find one. Disappointing day for our kids though as they were all small caches so no toys or swaps in them.

It's a good way to encourage the kids to walk without them moaning!

This is getting a bit addicitve. Found 5 out of 6 today. Some very clever hiding places.
