Well that's that theory blown out of the water!

I'm surprised that the person who let her go in front isn't suing.  This is America we're talking about after all.

Just read the details.  Headlines say 590 million.  But it was really only 370 milllion (it would only be 590 if you take it in instalments over 30 years.  And then you get taxed on it, so the headline 590 becomes 278 million.  Barely worth it !

Seriously though, it's a cheating way to advertise a lottery.

It's misleading, if you have a prize of any given size... just add 60% to it, to make it sound more attractive (by factoring in 30 yearsworth of interest into it).

Just think how many trailers you could buy for that?

Not to mention curly fries

how can 590m become 278m?

That's one savage cut!

Presumably the US government needs it to keep Marine One fuelled up or something

I think it was their equivalent of a "lucky dip" rather than chosen numbers.

Ah, but will Gloria? Bet she doesn't.

In that case, I would give the person who let me in half the money.

Hopefully they left a glass slipper behind to prove their identity.

I assume theyre mixing up their $ and £s ?

07/06/2013 at 15:48

dont think so...they are paying a lump sum up front rather than over 30 years.
if you took $370 upfront and reinvested every year at current rates, you'd have about $1.07bln in 30 years
if you take 1/30th of the $590bln every year and reinvest, after 30 years you'd have $1.13bln

I'd take the cash today though...

I'm struggling to think of ways in which you could spunk all that money away on pure decadence.  It's a fair old pile.  The best I can come up with is building an artificial ski slope out of cocaine, so that every time you fell over you'd be off your tits.

Giving to charity might be the more philanthropic thing to do though.

It's a hell of a lot of money, isn't it.

You'd HAVE to give some away to 'good causes' wouldn't you?

I"m not convinced she owes the other person in the queue anything. Was it a queue only for lottery tickets? People who buy lottery tickets in this country often have to get into queues in newsagents and grocers' shops - she probably didn't stop anyone else having the ticket. The morality of making multimultimillionaires of people is another matter...
