No I'm not taking the piss - he was my favourite darts player - I was quite into darts back in the day - haven't really played for 25 years though. That said I've set a board up upstairs for the kids and started chucking a few at it - OK I've had to set it up too low so the kids can reach the darts - but it's quite tempting to pack all this running/cycling nonsense in and take it up.
When I say proper sportsman - I mean he appealed to darts fans - he wasn't some pampered prima donna like some - not that he was an athlete.

Think the Dexys thing was a joke rather than a mistake - good band though, I like Jackie Wilson too - though he was meant to be a nasty piece of work unlike Jocky.

In that case I'm sorry, Pops.
I spent many long evenings/nights watching him do his thang, which he did so well. Just that I'd never think of him as a sportsman, that's all. RIP, Jocky.

" a proper sportsmen " does sound like a piss take when you talk about darts. I'm sure he was a nice bloke.

got to admit he had the character that made you want to watch darts.....can remember watching him when i was younger.......haven't watched much darts in recent times.......but i think darts players are as much sportsmen as are discus throwers or similar in the athletics........it takes a lot of practice and nerves and desire to be the best .....

Hope no Discus throwers are reading this! Surely practice, nerves and desire are common to every sport. Surely the bulk is needed by Discus throwers but the bulk of the darts players is just because they like chips and beer.

exactly.........practice nerves and desire make up the sportman...and Jocky had all three.....
in the 70 and 80's discus throwers were huge........the discus isn't that heavy and with the correct skill the huge bulk isn't needed.....i'm sure lots of that bulk was unsuitable foods and drugs......like a lot of rugby players in the 70's......
nowadays darts players aren't the size they were.the same as discus throwers...
