RIP Bill Smith...aged 75...legendary fell runner. Found after being reported missing for 3 weeks dead in a bog in the Trough of Bowland. He appears to have fallen into the bog whilst out running and was found by a hiker.

I didn't know the guy but all credit to him...he went out doing what he enjoyed.

Sad news - it sounds like he was an amazing bloke.

That is so incredibly sad. What a way to go

Didn't Elvis die on the bog too?

Nice SR, nice.  This bloke had more talent, support, knowledge and decency in his blisters than you'll ever know.  Have you even read about him?  Read his articles?  His published works?  Or even the truly heartfelt and honest comments from a huge running community that had serious respect for him?

I've yet to see you add anything of worth to a thread on this site.  Instead you seem intent on bitching like a spoilt bitch on a budget.  Why not save your snide comments for the Club Penguin.  Tool.

I am lucky enough to have met Bill on a few occasions and chatted with him at races. He always had an encouraging word no matter how poorly i was running.

His book 'studmarks on the summits' is an inspiration to all fell runners and his knowledge of fell running is second to none.

He was recently elected an honorary member at his club Clayton Le Moors in recognition of his outstanding service to the club and to fell running in general.

He was an outstanding gentleman and will be greatly missed.

RIP Bill

Really sad... But better than dying frail in a hospital bed.

I felt sad that while people had realised he wasn't around (he hadn't turned up to marshal for a race) no-one raised the alarm.

USB... he was probably such an idependent guy going off running everywhere that people just assume he's off running again.........and when he didn't turn up to marshall/

.you just assume he's not well........

it is a shame when people are not missed immediately when they are missing
